Wayne High Schools to Offer Dual Credit Options
The Wayne Township Board of Education approved agreements to partner with Fairleigh Dickinson University and Passaic County Community College at the April 23rd regular meeting. The school district pursued the agreements in an effort to add value to the high school experience. A dual credit course makes it possible for qualified high school students to earn credit toward meeting their high school graduation requirements with the added bonus of earning three college credits. College credits earned are 100% transferable to public colleges and universities in New Jersey and widely transferable to colleges across the country.

Students and parents at both Wayne high schools have already recognized the great benefit of the dual credit option and the classes that were initially offered for the 2015-2016 school year are nearly filled to capacity. Students are excited about the opportunity to take a college level class while still in high school. The additional expectations and rigor that comes with college level coursework will students with the transition from high school to college.

Parents benefit greatly when it comes to tuition savings. If students complete two classes during high school for six college credits, the cost to parents will be about $500 for the six credits. The cost to complete the same courses for six credits on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson would be about $7000. Parents would save about $6,500.

Based on the immediate popularity of the program, and the many benefits associated with dual credit, the district will continue to seek out partnerships to enhance high school electives. While the current agreements grant credit for business classes, additional agreements can be developed in other areas of study.
