Check Out the 2014 Summer Reading Lists
Summer vacation should be a time to decompress, relax, and create wonderful memories with friends and family; however, it does not mean that our students should take a break from learning altogether. As a matter of fact, there is a well-researched phenomenon referred to as the 'summer slide' whereby students may experience a loss of learning and reading achievement over the summer when they are not engaged in some sort of educational activity. In a recent blog entry posted by the US Department of Education, ideas were presented to start planning activities now to help prevent the "summer slide".
Right here in Wayne, in addition to all of the programs offered by the Wayne Public Library and our local community partners, Wayne Township Public Schools also encourages all of our students to continue their summer learning through summer reading.
Why Do Summer Reading? It increases:
- Reading level
- Visualization skills
- Language skills
- Thinking skills
Summer Reading Can:
- Increase a student's performance
- Increase opportunities for family engagement
- Increase a student's overall motivation to read
