Snow and School Budgets?
I bet you're wondering, "What does snow have to do with developing annual school district budgets?" Well, with the latest bout of inclement weather, we are reminded once more of the incredible challenges that school districts face when developing their general operating budgets year after year.
Annually, Boards of Education work with the Administration to determine their needs for the coming year. Not only do they need to consider the costs to pay ALL staff including teachers, administrators, specialists, and numerous support personnel, they must also factor in the costs to operate and maintain our facilities, such as supplies, utilities, and repairs. As budgets become tighter, it becomes more and more difficult to allocate funds based upon the needs that we know such as salaries, insurance, etc. versus some of the needs that remain unknown year to year such as funds needed to cover utilities and the costs of snow removal.
