Head of School Lisa Lalama
Not the threat of a hurricane, a nor'easter or the eventuality of a dreary rainy day could stand in the way of Wilmington Montessori School's first Homecoming this past Saturday.
Homecoming, organized by several alumni parents, was an opportunity for former and current students, parents, and staff to join in some fun and become reacquainted with each other and WMS.
The day was filled with joy. Each time the door opened another familiar face lit up as they were greeted by former classmates and friends. A spirited game of castle ball, dancing, exploring classrooms and picture taking rounded out the day.
What struck me the most about Homecoming is that it was just that...a chance to come home to the school where most of these teens and young adults began their school years. WMS has been here for 52 years and is still going strong. It is the place where alumni made friends who they still know and appreciate. It is the school where they learned how to learn and how to view teachers as their partners in learning. It is a nice place to return and recall how comfortable and wonderful school can be.
Thank you to everyone who made the day so welcoming and enjoyable. For those of you who missed it, we hope you will join us for future WMS homecomings where you, too, can be a part of the reunion.

Emergency Communication System Test - Tomorrow at 6 p.m.
WMS will test its emergency communication system tomorrow (Thursday, October 8) at 6 p.m. Our mass notification system is used to alert parents and staff of weather-related school closings or delays or other emergencies that require action from parents. The system does this through mass phone calls, emails and text messages. The notifications you receive will be based on your selections when you filled out your Emergency Alert Preferences Form.
Please take note of whether you received test messages at all of your preferred email addresses and phone numbers. If you do not receive these notifications, please use this form to update your preferences, email alert@wmsde.org or contact Heather Russell at 302-475-0555.

Join us on The Journey - October 16, 8:30 a.m. - noon
Experience the joy of Montessori through the eyes of a child!
From a toddler's first steps to a sixth-grader's trip to the United Nations and year-long community service project, it's easy to see the growth and development of a child during the course of his or her time at WMS. But how does it happen? What is it about the Montessori experience that prepares students for future success?
Join us for The Journey to deepen your understanding of how and why the Montessori Method works for your child. Experience the entire WMS educational cycle for yourself from the Toddler Program through sixth grade.
You will visit classrooms for each age level and participate in hands-on lessons led by teachers, using the same engaging materials your child uses in class. The Journey will end with a group discussion and Q&A with WMS staff.
Don't miss this opportunity to step out of the observation room and into the classroom!
Participants will earn five co-op hours per family. Pre-registered child-care is available - contact Cass Winner to sign up.

Dear WMS Dads,
We are planning to have our first 2015-16 WMS Dads' Club Meeting on Tuesday the 20th. This is a very casual get-together among the dads to talk about what is going on at Wilmington Montessori School and how we can get more involved in our children's school activities. We are looking for new ideas for events as well. We look forward to seeing the returning dads and meeting new dads - all dads are welcome!
Any questions? Please email or text us!

Service Dog Joins Room 11 Community by Lead Primary (3-6) Teacher Cathy Simon-Cord
I am sure many of you have encountered the newest (and furriest) addition to the WMS community: Bonnie, the service dog. Bonnie is a seizure response dog. Her job is to alert us of a child's seizure activity by making small gentle noises. She is a popular member of Room 11 where children have done their best not to touch or pet Bonnie - and this isn't easy considering her lovable face and welcoming demeanor!
Bonnie is not a small dog, but she is gentle and we have not encountered any child who has shown any fear of Bonnie since school began. However, having Bonnie as part of the class is sometimes similar to having a rock star in your midst. Adults more than children often forget that while that vest is on, Bonnie is working. If you see Bonnie in the hallways, please do not distract her from doing her job. She is a lifeline for a child and we must always be aware of that.
In Room 11, the children treat Bonnie with care and respect, as they would anyone else in the classroom. She goes everywhere with us, and I don't think the children are even aware of her presence anymore. When she occasionally steps on work or decides that a work rug is a good place to rest, the students know that they should tell a teacher and we will have Bonnie move. She has a special spot in the classroom, but she also joins us in our circle at times and goes to specials classes and the playground. All of the children are learning a valuable lesson from having Bonnie as part of our community. They are able to experience first-hand that we all have differences that make us unique. Maria Montessori believed that if children were exposed to varied experiences in their early education, they would grow up with tolerance and a better understanding of the world around them. We are all connected and more similar than we think, and having Bonnie as a part of our classroom and school is one more example of how a Montessori education embraces all children.
So think of Bonnie as an untouchable ambassador who is sharing her specific gifts and talents with your children each day. We feel lucky to have her with us.
