Weekly news and notes from Head of School Marie Dugan

Marie Dugan, Interim Head of School

So much to celebrate!

Welcome to the new calendar year. January will be a busy one, as we draw closer to the golden birthday for our wonderful school. Please be sure to join us for our upcoming celebrations. There will be an all-school assembly on Thursday, January 30, when we come together to celebrate the actual day when our incorporation papers were signed with the state of Delaware. Then, on Saturday, February, 8,  plan to join us for our 50th Anniversary Celebration at 7 p.m. This event is for ages 21 and older. You will find the invitation on your child's locker or in his or her take-home bag later this week!

In addition to our 50th anniversary festivities, we have more good news, Crystal Trust Foundation has awarded $100,000 to WMS for our science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, as well as our building needs. Also, the New York Community Foundation, honoring a contribution  from William and Judy McCartin Scheide, has awarded $50,000 in support of our school's current and future needs. These gifts are a wonderful 50th birthday present for our school and will allow us to continue our work toward the lofty goals that we have set in our strategic plan as we move through the next three years.

Looking Forward to 2014-15

In the midst of our excitement about our 50th year, we are looking ahead to our 51st as we prepare to send the all-important re-enrollment letter to our current families. This letter will provide information about our plans for school year 2014-2015. It is more important than ever for you to send us your completed enrollment form and tuition payment before our March 1 re-enrollment deadline. WHY? Because, we are soon going to send our teaching staff their contracts for the new year, and we need to be able to assure the enrollment in every classroom. We are holding your child's space in his/her classroom until March 1 at which time we will begin to open up spaces to new families and make decisions regarding teacher contracts. We are happy to announce that, with a small increase in tuition, we will be able to provide more staff compensation to ensure that we retain the best teachers in Delaware. Thank you for understanding your role in our planning and the importance of making your commitment as soon as possible. Please know that you can contact me at any time, if you have questions.

New WMS Film

A professional film crew is working at school this week to produce a new film about WMS that will debut at our 50th Anniversary Celebration on February 8. The film will star our students, staff, parents and alumni and highlight the beauty of the Montessori method and our school.

* Important Reminder - Financial Aid applications are due next Wednesday, January 15. Financial Aid notifications for returning families will be made prior to the March 1 re-enrollment deadline. Because funds are limited and demand is high, late filing of materials may result in non-renewal of a financial aid grant.
