About the Road Map Region Race to the Top Grant

In 2012, seven King County, Washington, school districts joined forces and won $40 million in federal Race to the Top funds over four years. The participating school districts are Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton, Seattle and Tukwila. The districts dubbed themselves The Road Map District Consortium, a reference to their participation in the Road Map Project, a community-wide effort in South Seattle and South King County to drive major educational improvement with a focus on personalized learning.

Dear  ,

We're pleased that we recently made a presentation about our region's Early Warning Indicators to the U.S. Department of Education District Reform Support Network, which was very well-received! In addition, for the upcoming school year the College Board will be rolling out a redesigned PSAT and SAT, and free preparation tools will be available. Finally, Rainier Beach High School was recently featured on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) NewsHour and was highlighted for its RTT-funded International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Congratulations to Seattle and the teachers and students at Rainier Beach!

Early Warning Indicator System Featured on Department of Education Webcast

We recently made a very well-received presentation of our region's Early Warning Indicators to the U.S. Department of Education District Reform Support Network!  We were selected as one of four Race to the Top grantees as a model for the ways in which our region uses leading indicators to guide personalized learning efforts. More than 100 individuals participated, including experts from 27 states and a wide-range of organizations (USDE, SEAs, LEAs, public and charter schools, foundations, for-profits, non-profits, regional educational laboratories, universities, community colleges, community agencies, and 1 police department.

It was a great honor for our region, and Highline Public Schools, which was highlighted in particular. Thank you to everyone who was involved, and to the U.S. Department of Education for the opportunity!
Free Preparation Tools For Redesigned PSAT and SAT
During the 2015-16 School year, the College Board will be rolling out a redesigned suite of assessments, including the redesigned PSAT and SAT. You can learn all about it on the College Board's website. Race to the Top funds allow all students to take these tests for free during the school day.

These redesigned assessments are intended to focus more on testing skills students learn in courses in school, and include all new types of questions, scoring and reports. In addition, students can receive free, personalized SAT prep through Khan Academy, including personalized instruction based on their PSAT scores. With support from Race to the Top, College Board and PSESD staff are working in partnership with each district and the Puget Sound College and Career Network to train staff in the new assessments, and importantly, support students in using the free preparation tools!
Rainier Beach High School Featured on NewsHour
Rainier Beach High School was recently featured on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) NewsHour. The school was highlighted for its International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, which was supported by Race to the Top. IB features advanced courses, much as similar Advanced Placement (AP) classes. First introduced in 2011, the IB program focuses on engaging Rainier Beach students with a high-end curriculum, including computer programming and advanced history and science courses. About 22 percent of Rainier Beach High School students are currently enrolled in the IB program, and it has been credited with increasing the school's graduation rate by 25 percent over the past 4 years.

For more information, please see related reporting and the NewsHour website. Congratulations to Rainier Beach and Seattle!
