About the Road Map Region Race to the Top Grant

In 2012, seven King County, Washington, school districts joined forces and won $40 million in federal Race to the Top funds over four years. The participating school districts are Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton, Seattle and Tukwila. The districts dubbed themselves The Road Map District Consortium, a reference to their participation in the Road Map Project, a community-wide effort in South Seattle and South King County to drive major educational improvement with a focus on personalized learning.

Dear  ,

We are excited to welcome new members to the Race to the Top-District Executive Committee! In addition, we recently had the pleasure of hosting a group of students from Seattle's Cleveland High School for a week of job shadowing at Puget Sound ESD. There is a new website repository that highlights what we've learned about Community Partnerships. Finally, some great new materials are available to help us all prepare for DiscoverU later this year.

Cleveland High School Students Visit Puget Sound ESD
Twelve high school juniors from Seattle's Cleveland High School recently spent a week with more than 50 staff members at Puget Sound ESD. They were participating in the school's first Job Shadow Week, supported by Race to the Top Project 8. Students were bused to PSESD where each day they were greeted by staff members who shared the work that they do, the path each took to this point in their careers and some advice as these young people explore their own futures. Students also spent time each day with specific departments learning more about the work of the agency, such as:  the agency's mission of becoming an anti-racist, multicultural organization; the technology requirements to support agency staff; and participating in a simulated investigation with the Risk Management team. They also spent time reflecting on what the job shadow experience meant to them.

Thank you to everyone who supported the experiences of these students as they spent the week with us learning about all the different skills in use and jobs offered in education!
Check Out Our New Community Partnerships Website Repository
We have begun a website repository where we can begin to highlight, capture and share our learning about community-school partnerships. It's located on the Community Partnerships tab on the Race to the Top website. Check it out to find resources on best practices and the tools our Deep Dive partners have created!
