About the Road Map Region Race to the Top Grant

In 2012, seven King County, Washington, school districts joined forces and won $40 million in federal Race to the Top funds over four years. The participating school districts are Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton, Seattle and Tukwila. The districts dubbed themselves The Road Map District Consortium, a reference to their participation in the Road Map Project, a community-wide effort in South Seattle and South King County to drive major educational improvement with a focus on personalized learning.

Dear  ,

As we prepare for the start of another school year, we are pleased to let you know about the very successful High School and Beyond Leadership Institute that was held last week. We look forward to working with all of our partners in the year to come to dramatically improve education in our region!
High School and Beyond Leadership Institute a Big Hit!

The second annual High School and Beyond Leadership Institute was held August 5-7, 2014. More than 50 middle- and high-school  counselors from around the region came together to Lead, Learn and Connect on advising middle- and high-school students about their post-secondary options.

During the Institute, counselors had the opportunity to share in a Best Practices Rapid Share, learned about Motivation and Engagement work in King County, and accessed High School and Beyond Planning resources. They also were able to focus on their leadership role in the school building.

This year's Institute brought the opportunity to learn about career pathways in the trades, a subject counselors have requested more training in. The group learned from Seattle Jobs Initiative, and then visited and toured a variety of training programs at South Seattle College and Highline College. Highline College included a focus on career pathways for students who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and who are in English Language Learner (ELL) programs.

The final day of the Institute brought principals together with their staffs to provide planning time related to the Road Map region work in the coming year.
