About the Road Map Region Race to the Top Grant

In 2012, seven King County, Washington, school districts joined forces and won $40 million in federal Race to the Top funds. The participating school districts are Auburn, Federal Way, Highline, Kent, Renton, Seattle and Tukwila. The districts dubbed themselves The Road Map District Consortium, a reference to their participation in the Road Map Project, a community-wide effort in South Seattle and South King County to drive major educational improvement with a focus on personalized learning.

Dear  ,

We are eager to share a number of recent milestones with our partners! The Road Map Region Race to the Top Executive Committee recently issued preliminary awards for our first investment fund, Project 1, Teaching & Leading. The Deep Dive 1 and Deep Dive 2 Projects have contracts in place and are off to a great start, and a community meeting will be held
on September 20th to gather feedback far and wide on the draft criteria to be included in the Deep Dive 3 Investment Fund RFP. Thank you for reading and passing along this newsletter to interested colleagues!

Project 1 Preliminary Awards Issued
At its September meeting, the Road Map Region Race to the Top Executive Committee issued preliminary awards of $2.2 million to districts for the Project 1 Investment Fund for Teaching & Leading. Congratulations to the districts for hitting this important milestone! Districts may access this fund to build teacher and principal content knowledge to help create personalized learning environments in the region's high-need schools. The emphasis of the fund is on scalable, high impact improvements in math, science and English language learner instruction as well as teacher/principal leadership. Click here for more information.

Race to the Top Support Starts for Deep Dive 1 and Deep Dive 2 Projects!
The Race to the Top contract has been signed with Kent School District for Deep Dive 1, the Kent East Hill Community-School Partnership project. Although this project has been underway for some time, it will receive more support through Race to the Top. Kent is now moving forward to hire a Family Engagement Coordinator to continue this unique project. Additionally, Race to the Top provides funds for parent and community engagement coaching, contracting with culturally responsive CBO partners to reach out to families, and translation and child care to allow families to attend trainings.

The Race to the Top contract has also been signed with Highline School District for Deep Dive 2, the White Center Community-School Partnership project. This will allow Highline to hire Extended Day Outcomes Teachers and to purchase computers for technology use during extended day time. Additionally, Race to the Top provides funds for contracting with community-based organizations to provide after-school and summer programs and to coordinate access to high-quality early learning opportunities.

Deep Dive teams from both of these projects met recently to identify lessons learned so far, which will inform the development of the DD3 Investment Fund. For more information on the Deep Dives projects, click here

Deep Dive 3 Community Feedback Meeting This Week
Please join us for a community meeting to gather feedback on the draft criteria to be included in the Deep Dive 3 Investment Fund RFP! The meeting will be held on September 20th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at Puget Sound ESD.

The Deep Dive 3 project creates an investment fund that aims to raise student achievement by allowing additional models of community-school partnerships of regional significance. The purpose is to further invest in advancing our region's knowledge regarding how to effectively operationalize intensive student-level interventions, in school and out.

Please sign up here for the meeting, and invite friends and colleagues! For more information, please contact Deep Dive 3 lead Matthew Gulbranson. For more information on Deep Dive 3, click here.
