Road Map Project and Race to the Top Grant Featured in Study of Place-Based Initiatives

The Road Map Project and our Race to the Top District grant were featured in a recently released paper entitled, The Role of Community Schools in Place-Based Initiatives: Collaborating for Student Success.

The paper, written by the Coalition for Community Schools, PolicyLink and the West Coast Collaborative, describes three "place-based" strategies, or efforts within the same geographic area, including cradle-to-career efforts. It highlights the Road Map Project's goal of doubling the number of students in South King County and South Seattle who are on track to graduate from college or earn a career credential by 2020.

The paper applauds the usefulness of the indicators and benchmarks that the Road Map Project has developed for workgroups such as birth to third grade, youth development, high school to college completion, data collection, English Language Learners, and STEM education. The paper also talks about our $40 million Race to the Top grant, and stresses the importance of schools, families and community groups working together for improvements in education.

Comment period extended for Project 8 Investment Fund draft RFP

The deadline for feedback on the College and Career Readiness Investment Fund draft RFP, first posted on July 12th, has been extended until July 25th, 2013.

We look forward to hearing from people who are interested in providing feedback on the document. Please send Hilary Loeb any feedback or respond to the online survey, which may be found here.

WaKIDS Teacher Training

The week of July 24th, new kindergarten teachers from across the region are learning about the Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) here at Puget Sound ESD.  The ESD is coordinating trainings around the region for new and returning state-funded, full-day kindergarten teachers.

WaKIDS is now supported by the state for every state-funded, full-day kindergarten classroom. By providing a snapshot early in the school year of where kindergartners are in their development, WaKIDS helps teachers personalize learning and allows us to track kindergarten readiness in a common way across our state. WaKIDS is one of the Race to the Top performance measures, which we are tracking on an annual basis.

WaKIDS focuses on connecting with families to discuss children's strengths and needs, conducting an assessment of each child's developing skills in the fall, and collaboration between kindergarten teachers and early learning professionals. For more information on WaKIDS, click here.
