  • Understanding Attention Deficit: The New ADHD What's new about ADHD? A lot, according to Yale professor Thomas Brown, Ph.D. You'll think differently about the condition once you get all the facts. Findings from neuroscience, brain imaging, and clinical research have dramatically changed the old understanding of ADHD as essentially a behavior disorder. Experts now see ADHD as a developmental impairment of the brain's self-management system, its executive functions. There are many other myths about ADHD, as you will see. So update your thinking about the condition with the facts.  Click here to read more
  • The Meaning of ADHD.
The more children know what ADHD means, the better. Here's how and why you should explain the meaning of ADHD to your child.Your son or daughter has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). You've done your due diligence, learning about the condition and how the symptoms affect him, academically and socially. Great. But have you shared what ADHD means with your child? Does she understand why she does things that upset others? Does he know why he is taking medication and how it works? Saying, "You are so hyper all of the time" makes your child feel he is doing something wrong. Saying, "Sometimes your brakes don't work so well, so you say and do things that might upset your friends" is better.Click here to read more
  • 10 Things You Should Never Tell Your Child "What were you thinking?" "You're not even trying!" Parents aren't perfect - we all wish we could take back some of the harsh things we've said. But here are 10 phrases that parents of ADHD kids should absolutely, positively never say out loud. People say some pretty insensitive things. ADHD myths and misinformation don't help. People blame us or our kids for behaviors controlled by the condition, and we know it's wrong. But sometimes frustrating behaviors can push even the most loving parents to say things we quickly regret. Here, our readers shared some of the words that should never be used to discipline an ADHD child - no matter what.Click here to read more
