  • Volunteers Needed!

Reach Child and Youth Development Society is a Ladner based non-profit organization that supports children with special needs. We are opening a small children's thrift store in downtown Ladner in April 2014 to help raise funds for our children's preschool.

We need several volunteers to help make this thrift store a success.

The thrift store, FINDS, will be open from 10am to 2pm three to five days per week. Ideally, volunteers will commit to at least one four to five hour shift per week. Sales and cashier volunteers must be available to work between 9.30am to 2.30pm at least one day per week. Sorting and pricing volunteers have more flexibility in hours (eg after school, evening or weekends are options depending on our volunteers' schedules).

Examples of volunteer duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Sorting and pricing
    • Sales

Social skills are one of the most important skills that children need to learn. More importantly, children need to have the opportunity to use the social skills they have learned. Social Smart Group is a program that provides a natural setting where children with Autism and special needs will be learning and practicing the social skills through playing, chatting, snacking, outing, and more. Social Smart Group is a 1.5-hour program that runs once a week for 10 weeks. There will be 8 children in the group, programmed by one behaviour consultant and one group facilitator. Throughout the 10 weeks, our goal is to help strengthen their social skills by guiding, coaching, and supporting their social interaction with their peers.

  • Let it Go - Autism Version.  This is a cover of "Let it Go" from Frozen, but with changed lyrics to reflect how I feel about finally getting and coming to terms with an ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder - diagnosis. It also goes out to everyone on the AS spectrum, especially the girls, and especially the girls that weren't diagnosed until adulthood. This song reflects mostly how I felt growing up - being stared at when I had a bad meltdown, people not understanding me, etc - though most of it still applies to my life now. • Disney's Frozen, Autism, and Letting it Go... I think I cried nearly the entire movie. Well about, 75% of it.I've been the proverbial ice queen, not allowing myself the space and time to feel what it meahttps://ui.constantcontact.com/rnavmap/emcf/email/edit?flow=edit&camefrom=view&agent.uid=1117046788963QBLOG: Disney's Frozen and parenting autismns to raise a child with autism.  In real life, I am the type to withdraw and go quietly within myself.  I've never been able to really "let it go".   By letting it go, I mean the guilt, the anger, the rage, and of course, the worry.  Autism has taken so much away from our life, but at the same time, autism has given my family back so much more: a deep understanding of health, learning, education, food, unconditional love, and acceptance.Click here to read more
    • QBLOG: Disney's Frozen and parenting autism.  I understand that the movie Frozen can be interpreted in many ways. Some might see the simple story of sisterly love (as I did). Others might see it as a metaphor for gays and lesbians who need to conceal their sexual orientation. You could also interpret it as something religious (Elsa as a Christ figure), or an argument for climate change. I'm sure there are many other ways to go with this one, which is perhaps why the movie remains so popular for adults as it is for kids. No matter, I'm sticking with the autistic community on this one.  Click here to read more

  •  TO AUTISM SPEAKS: A Call for Accountability.  Autistic people object that those descriptions do not fairly reflect the realities or value of our lives.  That while, yes, often it is hard, that's not all our lives are.  That characterizations of "epidemic," "tsunami," or "national catastrophe" devalue our lives, and that we suffer when attacks on "autism" fall on us.  Which they do, always, because autism is not separable from us.  That we might wish some things were easier, but those issues need to be addressed with the complexity and nuance that they truly require to understand. Click here to read more

ADD/ADHD

  • Learn About ADHD: Focus on Hyperfocus.  Information about ADHD symptom of hyperfocus -- a common symptom that explains why many attention deficit children and adults can concentrate so intently at times.  It's no secret that children and adults with attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD) often struggle to focus on tasks they find uninteresting. High distractibility -- in children with ADHD who are unable to stay focused on a classroom lecture or in adults with ADD who never get around to doing their paperwork -- is a key ADHD symptom and diagnosis criterion.  Click here to read more
  •  How I Channeled My Energy Into Success.  As a child with dyslexia, I was scolded for fidgeting. Now my restless streak is the secret of my success. I was one of those kids, since the first grade. Teachers knew it and my classmates did, too: Jonathan Mooney was kind of crazy. As one of those kids, I made friends with the janitor, the only visitor at my desk in the hallway. And I was on a first-name basis with Shirley, the receptionist in the principal's office. • Fidget to Focus. Doing two things at once can enhance focus and improve performance for ADHD kids and adults. Learn how. What Is a Fidget? Experts believe that engaging in an activity that uses a sense other than what's required for your primary task - listening to music while reading a social studies textbook, for example - can enhance focus and improve performance in children with attention deficit disorder. These secondary tasks are called fidgets - mindless activities you can do while working on a primary task.  Click here to read more

  • Today's Children & Youth, Tomorrow's Families 2014 Youth and Family Consensus Conference, Friday, May 2 - Saturday, May 3, 2014.
    • The purpose of this conference is to bring together youth and families with researchers, policymakers, service providers and educators to share knowledge and experiences about practices that best meet the needs of people living with mental health and/or substance use challenges. The conference will focus on what youth and families need from each other, their communities and service systems to flourish today and in future generations.

The primary aim of the conference is to develop consensus statements on practices that support child and youth mental health within the context of the family, while acknowledging the unique needs and rights of young people. We want to know what evidence resonates with youth and families. What is their experience of promising practice and how can we engage youth and families to help define "family smart" practice within the service systems that touch our lives?

FamilySmart™ is a values-based approach to listening, understanding and responding to the mental health needs of individual family members and whole families. Conceived by the Institute of Families, it is a philosophy, practice and endorsement all rolled into one. FamilySmart ™ is intended to help families, and those working with them in communities and across systems, to identify and act upon what is meaningful and what works to improve the mental health of infants, children, youth, parents and whole families. Through this conference we hope to further define and refine FamilySmart™.

  • Heart-Mind 2014: The Science of Kindness
Thursday, May 8, 2014 - Saturday, May 10, 2014 Old Auditorium, UBC, Vancouver, BC

Heart-Mind 2014 brings together scientists, educators, parents, out-of-school care providers, health and wellness professionals, recreation and community leaders - and all those who want to help children flourish.

The theme of this year's conference is The Science of Kindness.

Compassion, empathy, altruism and kindness are positive qualities we intuitively want our children to have. These qualities help a child to be successful in all aspects of life. Scientific research shows that when children perform acts of kindness they are happier and have more friends. Bullying is reduced. Some studies even show that helping others helps them stay healthy by diminishing the effect of diseases and disorders-both psychological and physical.

Heart-Mind 2014 will share the most up-to-date science and practice related to how adults can cultivate kindness, empathy, compassion and altruism in children and in themselves - in families and schools, during recreational activities, and throughout the community. Kindness towards people, other living creatures, the environment and themselves. Click here for more information

  • Supporting Youth Exposed to Chronic Trauma & Advanced Training on Developmental Trauma Successful Strategies for Caregivers & Professionals  June 5 & 6, 2014
La Perla Ballroom , New Westminster, BC
Day 1: Developmental Trauma: Supporting youth exposed to chronic trauma experiences
This training will focus on the core concepts of developmental trauma, examining both a description of the impact of chronic trauma experiences and various treatment models. Special attention will be paid to the specific challenges that many of these youth face, including problems in the following areas: attachment and bonding, biology, emotion regulation, cognition and learning, and behavior. Because the impact is often so severe, caregivers, clinicians, educators and child welfare workers must be well versed in trauma theory, as well as the unique interventions necessary to help these youth heal and grow. An integrative model of assessment and treatment will be discussed, with a focus on the work of Patricia Ogden, Ph.D., Daniel Hughes, Ph.D and Daniel Siegel, MD.
Day 2: Advanced Training on Developmental Trauma
This training will focus on a more in-depth investigation of the ways in which youth are impacted by early trauma experiences, as well as advanced assessment and treatment approaches. Discussion will also focus on ways to incorporate trauma-informed practices into different settings and levels of care, and important skills for supervisors and clinical consultants.

  • This May 7th, National Child & Youth Mental Health Day, we want to support the mental health of kids by connecting them to parents and caring adults.
Our campaign is... I care about you. The 2012 survey by RBC Foundation on Children's Mental Health, 'Children's Mental Health Parents Poll White Paper' stated that "the time for acceptance of mental health is now - not a generation from now. Life-saving conversations hinge on parents' comfort level with deeply unsettling topics, and on their trust that communities will rally to support them". We believe this starts with... I care about you. Click here to read more
