  • NEW DSM V Controversy
    • Autism And The DSM-5: Doorstop Or Diagnostic Tool?  "I use it as a doorstop." That was the response I got from a psychiatrist when I gestured at his copy of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)-TR-IV and asked what he thought about it. If you read news stories about this book and its update, the DSM-5 (they've abandoned the Roman numerals), you might think that a clinician keeps at hand a much-used, heavily notated, dogeared version of this tome, the so-called "bible" of psychiatry. But from what I can see, the general inclination regarding this particular bible is apostasy.  Click here to read more

  • A young Vancouver Island man has written a book about what it's like to have Aspergers. Vee Cooper has his story in Vital People.CLick here to see the video on CHEK TV.

  • Carly Fleischmann: Video about autistic Toronto teen wins international acclaim A Toronto-made video which depicts the struggles autistic people have to cope with in daily life has won a Cannes Silver Lion award.  It's pretty simple, getting a cup of coffee in a caf: You choose, you ask, you drink.  Unless you're an autistic person, like Carly Fleischmann, an 18-year-old Toronto student who is non-verbal. Her world is filled with all sorts of audio input competing for her attention, along with sights and smells - filtering all this and making her wishes known to even family members can be a herculean task. So getting a cup of coffee is not always so simple.

  • 'Best Kept Secret': How a teacher helps autistic students.  "Best Kept Secret" is a new documentary worth watching about a teacher in New Jersey who works with autistic students to help then prepare to live in the world once they graduate from school.  The first question I get about Best Kept Secret is usually, "What is your personal relationship to autism?" Until making this film, I always thought the answer was, "None." What I learned is that we are all connected to it. Autism is part of who we are as a society. Across the country young adults who turn 21 are pushed out of the school system. They often end up with nowhere to go; they simply disappear from productive society. This is what educators call "Falling off the cliff."  CLick here to read more and see a trailer of the film!

  • "Bought" A Film by Jeff Hays and Bobby Sheehan:

    • Jeff Hays today announced that principal photography has begun on the new documentary film - Bought. A new crowd funding campaign at indiegogo.com has an early trailer. Bought is a film dedicated to uncovering, exposing and highlighting the facts all individuals have a right to know. Andrew Wakefield may have been credited for the global awakening of the potential relationship between MMR vaccinations and autism, which has been highly controversial and debated heavily, but Bought is committed to uncovering the facts so each person can make the decision that is right for him or her.

    • Autism Speaks has a new tool kit for families: More than half of children with autism take medicine at some point during their childhood. Deciding to use medicine to treat children with autism is a difficult decision for most families. The Autism and Medication: Safe and Careful Use tool kit was created to help families work with their healthcare providers to make sure that when medicine is chosen as a form of treatment, it is taken safely and effectively. The kit includes information on "target symptoms," tools to help monitor effectiveness and practical strategies to treat common side effects. It can be used any time a child is taking medicine, regardless of when it was first prescribed.  CLick here to download

  • MACH system from MIT can coach those with social anxiety.  Plenty of people out there have a serious phobia of public speaking and there are tons of other disorders, such as Asperger's, that severely limit a person's ability to handle even simple social interactions. M. Ehsan Hoque, a student at the MIT Media Lab, has made these subjects the focus of her latest project: MACH (My Automated Conversation coacH). At the heart of MACH is a complex system of facial and speech recognition algorithms that can detect subtle nuances in intonation while tracking smiles, head nods and eye movement. The latter is especially important since the front end of MACH is a computer generated avatar that can tell when you break eye contact and shift your attention elsewhere.  Click here to read more
