Autism - NEW DSM V Controversy
- Temple Grandin on DSM-5: "Sounds like diagnosis by committee". When it comes to autism, Grandin argues we're paying too much attention to labels -- and not enough to individuals. My research on subtypes of sensory problems got me thinking about the limitations of labels. I realized that two different labels - underresponsive to sensory input, and overresponsive to sensory input - can describe the same experience: too much information! The labels might be useful, but, as in the skiing example, their usefulness depends on what you want to know. Do you want to know what the behavior looks like from the outside? Or do you want to know what the experience feels like from the inside? Do you want a description for a set of symptoms - a diagnosis? Or do you want a source for a particular symptom - a cause? - Safeminds: Impact of the DSM-5 Criteria for ASD - Community Update - May 2013. This month, the American Psychiatric Association will publish the latest edition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual - the DSM-5. The manual contains significant changes to the diagnostic criteria for individuals with autism. Click here to read more

New DSM combines four conditions under one umbrella called Autism Spectrum Disorder. Those with Asperger's among many nervous about how changes will affect services. David Moloney says changes to Asperger's are "distressing," because the "Aspie" identity is widely recognized, distinctive and important to him and many others. Click here to read more
-
New DSM Brings Change, Assurances For Those With Autism. Among the most controversial changes to the manual is its updated definition of autism. The psychiatric association decided to eliminate the diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome and instead fold it as well as childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified into the broader category of "autism spectrum disorder," with clinicians indicating a level of severity. - Tech Giant To Recruit Workers With Autism. A leading software company, with offices in the United States and around the globe, is launching a strategic effort to hire people with autism in order to tap their unique talents. Setting aside our own family's reality-that an SAP job would be completely inappropriate for my son, now 25-I envision enormous potential for failure and disappointment. True, these come with the autism "territory." This neuro-biological, communication disability is, indeed, both an epidemic and a puzzle not easily solved, even by a mass hiring like this one. ADD/ADHD -
Not Just Teammates - Friends. You've signed your kid up for organized activities - but it takes more than that to help her make real friends in dance class or on the team. The usual suggestion parents give each other to help their children make friends is to put them in an organized activity - a team, a class, or scouts. This is helpful, but it's only the first step. Research shows that organized activities by themselves don't improve friendships. Take these steps and your child will have more fun, more play dates, and lasting friendships. Click here to read more

Help for Moms with ADHD. Being a mom with ADHD can be tough. Here's help. Being a mom is a hard job, whether you're a stay-at-home parent or a busy professional trying to balance a career, kids and everything else. It's doubly hard when you're a mom with ADHD. If you have a child with ADHD, there's a 60 percent chance that either you or your mate also qualifies for diagnosis. And it's not always Dad. Doctors have found that in families that have two ADHD children, there was an equal chance that either the mother or the father had ADHD. Click here to read more

Secrets of the ADHD Brain. Most people are neurologically equipped to determine what's important and get motivated to do it, even when it doesn't interest them. Then there are the rest of us, who have attention deficit. ADHD is a confusing, contradictory, inconsistent, and frustrating condition. It is overwhelming to people who live with it every day. The diagnostic criteria that have been used for the last 40 years leave many people wondering whether they have the condition or not. Diagnosticians have long lists of symptoms to sort through and check off. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders has 18 criteria, and other symptom lists cite as many as 100 traits. Click here to read more

Understanding Your ADHD Diagnosis: Medical Information About Attention Deficit. A doctor talks about ADHD symptoms, causes, misconceptions and treatments associated with a diagnosis. In recent years, there's been another major shift in our understanding of ADHD. Increasingly, researchers are recognizing that ADHD symptoms overlap with impairments in what neuropsychologists call executive functions. The term refers not to the activities of corporate executives, but to the brain's cognitive management functions. The term is used to refer to brain circuits that prioritize, integrate, and regulate other cognitive functions. Click here to read more

Learning Disabilities: Recognizing Dysgraphia in Children with ADHD.
Dysgraphia is a learning disability that sometimes accompanies ADHD and affects writing skills, handwriting and spelling. How to recognize the symptoms... Austin has dysgraphia, a learning disability that can accompany attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD). Dysgraphia affects handwriting, spelling, and the ability to put thoughts on paper. It makes the process of writing maddeningly slow, and the product often illegible. Forming letters requires such effort that a child may forget what he wanted to say in the first place. ADHD 2.0: New Questions in Sixth Grade and Beyond. As a child grows into his middle years, parents need to upgrade his understanding of ADHD and give him a new toolbox of strategies for the challenges ahead. You can find a lot of great advice on explaining ADHD to a young child - many parents use the analogy from Dr. Ned Hallowell of having a "racecar brain with worn-down brakes."But as children grow, their thinking becomes more complex. At the same time, academic and social challenges increase, so simple explanations fall short during middle school.Preteens need an upgrade in information about ADHD, as well as new study and organization strategies. Revisiting the discussion during the middle years also paves the way for helping your child monitor his own behavior and needs, and start taking on the responsibility for managing the condition. Tease-Proof Your Preteen with ADHD. Practicing social skills at home will make school a much friendlier place for your child with ADHD. During a recent visit to a school, I noticed a student, Danny, roughhousing with a classmate. The boy said, "Stop it," but Danny laughed and continued, seemingly oblivious to his friend's irritation. When questioned later about this interchange, Danny responded, "He likes it when we play rough." Later that day, Danny was clueless as to why he was teased and called "loser" by his offended friend.
