Autism - Parents of autistic children 'exasperated' by financial costs. Amanda Telford's decision to leave her severely autistic son at a provincial developmental services office in Ottawa this week was a drastic step for a frustrated parent. Click here for more of this story on CBC
- Conservative MP says he relates to Ottawa family's challenges with autistic son. Conservative MP Mike Lake says he can relate to an Ottawa couple who turned their 19-year-old son with autism over to the province, as his own autistic child is approaching adulthood and the uncertainty of whether he will have access to the care he needs. Lake, MP for Edmonton-Mill Woods-Beaumont, is the father of an autistic son, 17-year-old Jaden, and the two have made numerous media appearances in recent weeks to raise awareness about autism.Lake said he understands the challenges experienced by Amanda Telford and her husband, who on Tuesday left their son Phillip at a government office for adults with disabilities because they can no longer provide the care that he needs. The new definition of autism. Trying to make sense of a confusing world. When a rewrite of psychiatry's diagnostic guide is released in San Francisco later this month, it will include a revised definition of autism, expanding it into a full spectrum disorder that can range from mild to heartbreakingly severe. This new and already controversial fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) will add the term "autism spectrum disorder," which is currently used by many experts. Click here to read more
- Autism & ability. Success in anything doesn't just happen. For children with autism, learning new skills is often made more difficult because of sensory processing issues. There may be too much noise in the next room for Jill to concentrate on the directions, or Marcos may not be able to look at numbers on a computer screen and relate them to those on a page of homework. It all has to do with contingencies. Click here to read more

Video: Autism & employment Autism Hangout. I had the good fortune of attending a business conference sponsored by the Autism Society of MN (AuSM) last night. Temple spoke, but to me the most inspiring talks were by representatives of Best Buy, 3M and Cargill. All three companies are now looking for and hiring people on the spectrum for their unique strengths and values. Based on their success stories, clearly it's paying off.

- I Will Not Let An Exam Result Decide My Fate - Suli Breaks,Vanity Fair,2009
"I Will Not Let An Exam Result Decide My Fate" picks up on the education topic but takes a different stance and angle from "Why I Hate School But Love Education". This poem talks about how we have been made to think about how education and getting university degrees can give us opportunities to have a better chance in making our dream careers a reality. It also touches on how as individuals we are judged and tested by how well we perform on exams, but not all people perform well in exams so why are they made out to feel like they're dumb? The inconsistencies of the education system are really peeled open to reveal a deep problem that needs to be addressed and how society's needs have changed to make this even more apparent. When it boils down to it, why are we misled into thinking that education is the only way forward for successful means in our work and career lives? We need to open our minds and educate ourselves that exam results aren't the barometer of success and that we can't let them decide our fate. We are in charge of our own destinies! Please WATCH this amazing video now!

- Relationships make me anxious! All of us long for deep, safe and satisfying connections with others. Not all of us however, received the tools and skills to create this effectively. The good news is, with knowledge and training we can achieve more lasting, fulfilling relationships. Most of us will have a style of interacting, reacting and bonding with others that was created and carved out by the types of interactions we experienced with our own caregivers growing up. In psychology we refer to this as our "attachment style".
There are 4 main styles we've identified. I have attempted to outline very briefly these styles in the hope that this may help you understand the motivating forces and impetus behind your own behaviours in relationship as well as your partner's.
