  • Autism Revolution: Breakthrough Strategies for Parents. After years of treating patients and analyzing scientific data, prominent Harvard Medical School researcher and clinician Dr. Martha Herbert offers a revolutionary new view of autism and a transformative strategy for dealing with it. Autism is not a hardwired impairment programmed into a child's genes and destined to remain fixed forever, as we're often told. Instead, it is the result of a cascade of events, many seemingly minor: perhaps a genetic mutation, some toxic exposures, a stressful birth, a vitamin deficiency, and a series of infections. And while other doctors may dismiss your child's physical symptoms - the diarrhea, anxiety, sensory overload, sleeplessness, frequent illnesses or seizures - as coincidental or irrelevant, Dr. Herbert sees them as vital clues to what the underlying problems are, and how to help. In this lecture she share how to approach autism as a collection of problems that can be overcome - and talents that can be developed. Each success you achieve gives your child more room to become healthy and to thrive.  Click here to see Dr. Herbert!

Miriam Elfert is a graduate student at UBC and is conducting a study to learn about what it's like for fathers of children with autism to participate in a weekly discussion group with other fathers. You are invited to participate in this study.
Shop Talk is a group developed specifically for fathers of children with autism to meet and talk about their experiences of parenting. Each group will consist of 6-8 fathers who will talk about different topics every week, including the challenges of parenting a child with autism, stress management, and how having a child with autism has affected their relationships with friends and family members.
You are eligible to participate if you: 1) are the father of a child with autism who is younger than 11 years old and who was diagnosed between 6-18 months ago, 2) are currently married or in a common-law relationship, 3) are committed to attending all of the weekly group sessions, and 4) are not currently receiving psychotherapy or taking medication for mental health issues.
Participants will be assigned to 1 of 2 groups, which will run consecutively. Each group will consist of nine, 2-hour weekly group sessions, for a total of 18 hours. Sessions will take place at a regular, convenient time for group members each week at the Play and Learn Centre at 11425 - 84th Avenue in North Delta.  In total, the time commitment for the study will be 18 hours for the group sessions and approximately 3 hours for completion of the questionnaires, for a total of 21 hours.
Shop Talk is offered free of charge to participants. To cover the cost of transportation, participants will receive $10 for every Shop Talk session they attend, plus an honorarium of $20 for participating in the study, for a maximum of $110.

ADD

ADD/ADHD

  • A Healthy Appetite for ADHD Children.  ADD medications can trigger appetite and weight loss in children. Why it's critical for parents to adjust schedules, dosages or prescriptions to find a solution. About a decade ago, when we decided to start our daughter on Ritalin, we knew there would be challenges. But back then, information about ADHD wasn't as accessible as it is today. One thing we weren't prepared for was her immediate loss of appetite and weight.  Click here to read more

  • Does Your Child Have a Learning Disability? Take This Self-Test.  Find out if a learning disability might be causing your child's problems in school--and what you should do if they are. NOTE: This test is not intended to diagnose or to replace the care of a health care professional.  Thirty to 50 percent of individuals with ADHD have a learning disability (LD). The reverse is also true. Thirty to 50 percent of individuals with LD have ADHD. If a child has been diagnosed with ADHD and continues to struggle academically even with treatment, he may have an LD.Click here to read more

  • Beyond the ADHD Diagnosis: Understanding Common Learning Disabilities in ADHD Children.  Roughly half of all children diagnosed with ADHD also suffer from learning disabilities like dyslexia. Here are some common symptoms.  A mother takes her daughter to the family doctor because she's always tired and lacks energy. The doctor notes that the linings of her eyelids are pale and concludes that she has iron deficiency anemia. The doctor prescribes iron.  Another mother hears from her daughter's teacher that she isn't sitting still and paying attention in class. The teacher does some rating scales that confirm this observation.  The mother takes these comments and forms to the family doctor, who says, 'Why don't we put her on Ritalin (or Adderall or Dexedrine or Strattera....)?'

In each case, the doctor has observed symptoms that suggest a problem. However, before treatment is started, it's critical to clarify the specific cause of it. Clearly, in the first case, the doctor would do several diagnostic tests before concluding the cause of anemia and starting a treatment plan.  This approach is just as critical in making a diagnosis of ADHD.Click here to read more

  • Neurofeedback for Autism and ADHD.  Neurofeedback can be an effective alternative to medications in the treatment of symptoms related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Neurofeedback has been found to be effective in changing brain function and creating substantial improvements in clinical symptoms in children, adolescents, and adults who have numerous different biologic brain conditions. These disorders include such things as epilepsy, attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and learning disabilities (Hammond, 2005). Many children with ASD suffer from related symptoms and these often obstruct learning for children and further impact their success in school and other activities. Neurofeedback training can produce significant and lasting results. Click here for more information Or call Doug West, 604-771-1344

  • Heart-Mind 2013: Helping Children Thrive at the Dalai Lama Centre with Goldie Hawn!
Thursday, May 9, 2013 - Saturday, , 2013.  University of British Columbia, Vancouver,
Heart-Mind 2013 brings together some of the leading minds in child development and contemplative practice - from scientific researchers to practitioners - to address the Dalai Lama's question, "How can we educate the hearts of children?"
Register Now  Early bird pricing through March 15th.
The theme of this year's conference is Mindfulness and its role in helping children thrive physically, socially and emotionally.  It is for all those who care for and about children - parents, educators, mental health workers, healthcare professionals, out-of-school-care providers, yoga instructors, recreation leaders, academics, thought leaders and many others.
The conference provides a wonderful opportunity to network with like-minded people who are committed to integrating mindfulness into the lives of children.
Please join us as we explore the growing body of knowledge from evidence-based practice and scientific research that indicates how mindfulness helps children thrive.
Scientific studies show that practicing mindfulness enhances students' concentration and attention, as well as their ability to make decisions and control impulses.  Mindfulness helps children get ready to learn, and it can lead to physical and mental well-being.
We can cultivate mindfulness in children - and the adults in their lives - so we can all be mindful wherever we are.
