  • Autistic Basketball Star Jason McElwain Qualifies for Boston Marathon. You may not remember the name Jason "J-Mac" McElwain but I bet most people remember his story. J-Mac dealt with his autism since he was young, struggling to socialize with other kids but he always enjoyed the game of basketball.  He became the team manager for Greece-Athena High School for 4 years when the coach gave him the opportunity to play in his first and only basketball game of his career in 2006. J-Mac, 17 at the time, entered the game and air-balled his first shot but then managed to make six 3-point shots and totaled the game with 20 points. His teammates carried him off the floor and the next day his touching story made national news everywhere. Well it's 6 years later and McElwain, now 23, has hit national news once again. This time it's not for basketball, instead it's for running a marathon. He recently ran in his first marathon, the 2012 MVP Health Care Rochester Marathon and finished at 15th place in 3:01:42.  Click here to read more

  • Why Autistic Kids Make Easy Targets for School Bullies.  A new study finds that children with autism spectrum disorders are bullied far more often than their typically developing peers - nearly five times as often - but parents of autistic kids think the rate is even higher than that. In the study, about 46% of autistic children in middle and high school told their parents they were victimized at school within the previous year, compared with just over 10% of children in the general population. Calling it a "profound public health problem," lead author Paul Sterzing of Washington University in St. Louis told the New York Times that the "rate of bullying and victimization among these adolescents is alarmingly high  Click here to read more

  • Autism can have large effects, good and bad, on a disabled child's siblings.  One of the least fun moments I recall from my years of growing up with an autistic brother was when he bit me on the cheek - just in time for my class photo. I was 12 and he was 11. I went into school with visible bite marks, and when they sat me in the chair for my solo shot, I told them that the cat had done it. That's one of the bad stories. As for a good one, um, to be honest, I have a hard time coming up with much.

  • Teaching Time Management to Children with ADHD. Teachers' tools and techniques to help ADHD students get organized and use classroom time more efficiently.

Making good use of the hours and minutes of the day requires planning, prioritizing, and sticking to a schedule. These skills don't come easily to children with attention deficit disorder (ADD ADHD). How can you help your students do a better job of estimating how long it take to complete a task or to get somewhere? How can you get them to pay attention to due dates?  Here are some helpful strategies.  Click here to read more

  • Is It OCD or ADD/ADHD? It's not always easy to tell whether it's attention deficit disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder that's causing your child to be fidgety, inattentive, or distracted.  Some ADHD diagnoses are more difficult to make than others. Because many disorders "look like" ADHD, it is not always easy to determine whether the hyperactivity and/or inattention and/or impulsivity is caused by ADHD or another condition.  Click here to read more

FASD

FASD

  •  Announcing the FASD Pocket Card Pilot Project. Wallet-sized cards have been used in many areas of North America to help alert police officers and medical professionals when they are working with a person who has been diagnosed with an FASD or is suspected of living with FASD. Often, professionals are unable to recognize when a person has an invisible disability, particularly in stressful crisis situations.  To address some of these concerns in BC, a working committee was established for the Vancouver and Fraser Regions to develop a pocket card for use in this region. The pilot phase of the FASD Pocket Cards is now ready for implementation! Cards will be available to those eligible through a restricted list of agencies that have experience working with individuals with FASD. Four different cards are available which are specifically worded for various individuals. Click here to learn more

  • NATURE'S ANSWER TO IMMATURITY:DEVELOPING A MATURE TEMPERAMENT IN
CHILDREN with Dr. Deborah MacNamara.  The capacity for self-control and to reflect on one's actions are at the root of a mature temperament. These capacities are at the forefront of the developmental agenda and are often referred to in the literature as self-regulation and executive functioning. The focus of this presentation will be on understanding the integrative
process and how it unfolds in a child. The development of a mature temperament is
critical in helping our children reach their full human potential and Dr. MacNamara will address the role of adults in creating the conditions that will get them there.

  • Yes We Ring The Bell. Yes The Door Opens. No You Can't Go In.  Halloween is growing nearer - I can tell because there are more Christmas decorations for sale in the Stop & Shop, a sure sign that Halloween is upon us. As jabberwocky as that sounds - I think that's how much of Halloween feels to our children on the spectrum. It's a day (and evening) full of contradictions, things that aren't what they appear to be, and mixed messages.  Click here to read more

  • It's here! The start of this year's list of all things spooktacular around town for you and your tots. • Halloween for children with autism.  Halloween is considered among most kids as one of the best holidays of the year. Dressed up as their favorite character or superhero, kids are allowed to be something fantastical for an evening and go to strangers houses and ask for candy, the very thing kids are told not to do every other day of the year. Staying up late, children fill their mouths with chocolate and sweet delights and then, well past their bedtimes, succumb to a sugar coma.
