I once ripped my pants trying to pull my key ring out of my pockets.
I have sat down and had a key stab my thigh and almost bring me to tears.
I have to tighten my belt or the weight of my keys might cause my pants to fall off.
It sounds like a Jeff Foxworthy comic routine.
You might have too many keys if...
I have no idea what some of my keys belong to. Two I think are to a house we lived in ten years ago.
You and I should get rid of our extra keys.
If you don't, soon you may be standing at your front door in torrential rainfall, wind whipping, trees bending, with your family behind you begging you to open the door while you frantically try each key, which all look the same in the dark, praying to Jesus you find the right one before the next lightning strike.
Forgive the dramatization, but this is our life. We over commit. We buy mountains of stuff. We have hundreds of "friends" and "followers". And we drag all this with us, thinking each one is the key to life.
But all these keys are killing us, consuming our energy, distracting us, slowing us down, and keeping us locked out of the Kingdom.
Daily we're flipping through all our keys trying to find the right one, hoping it won't be too late.
Last week, we started a new series, "What on Earth Am I Here For?" We named the stuff that matters: worship, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, and evangelism. These are the keys to the Kingdom, to God's presence and power.
We are in the season of Lent, a forty day period of preparing for Easter. Traditionally Christians give up something for Lent. We let something die, let it go, so Christ can come more fully to life in us.
This is a good time for you and me to take a key or two off our key rings.
See you Sunday.
