Announcing "Artistic Alchemy"
It's been in the works for many months, and now it's official: I, Sharon Alves, Sandra Bruce, and Heidi Emmett have teamed up to form a merry band of designers. Our blog launched today with a first, not-to-be-missed post by Sandra. It also has all the details on our first retreat, September 2-5, 2014, at Zephyr Point Conference Center, South Lake Tahoe. Click here to learn more and, if so inclined, follow along on our adventure!

I'll have more info on my workshop, "Luminosity and Luster, Playing with Color and Light" in future posts.

Hot Off the Press. . .
My Urban Ombrés quilt is in the new issue of Modern Patchwork (Winter, 2014).

Here's a photo of the quilt again. If you're interested in a kit of all the fabrics you see here, email me through my website. Also email me if you'd like to buy a copy of the magazine, which has the directions.

Transparency Retreat Wrap-Up
We had a fabulous time a few weeks ago. The colors were lovely and the weather so nice. I thought you might like to see some student work. We did both parent/child and layered transparency strategies. Keep in mind that these are simple cut-and-paste exercises; neatness did not count!

A transparency of value, color, and design, with a light parent, dark parent, and a child that looks like the logical offspring.

Also an example of value, color, and design transparency. The colors mix wonderfully in the child, and the design seems to flow from the light parent through the child.

More parent/child examples. The upper right block looks truly transparent.

And a few more. Aren't they amazing?

These are layered transparencies: light triangles appear to lie on top of dark triangles, creating the illusion of see-through color.

Next month I hope to show you some of the quilts that come out of this class. Ladies, I had so much fun with you!  (And I will be sending you more photos.)
Lecture and Workshop Schedule

Note: You can often attend guild meetings and take their workshops if you aren't a member. If you're interested in any of these events, let me know, and I'll put you in touch with the guild.

If you've received this newsletter, you may have attended one of my workshops or bought one of my books, patterns, or color wheels. It's easy to opt out, below, but I hope you'll stick around to see what's in store. It's all about color, using it, enjoying it, and sharing it with other quilters.

Thank you!
