BE in College
The Synagogue Life Committee has mailed holiday gift packages to our college students for many years. This academic school year, we will launch BE in College Packages. Rather than sending one package to our college students, we will mail three packages over the academic year! These packages will help to observe Shabbat and holidays and to let the recipients know that they are part of the Beth El community.
To sign your child(ren) up for the 2015-2016 academic year, visit BE in College.

SULAM for Emerging Leaders One of the impressive things about Beth El is the partnership between staff and lay leaders. Some people easily adopt lay leader rolls, perhaps because of past personal or professional experience that left them feeling prepared. If you have not previously been involved in the lay leadership, but are interested, we want to cultivate your talents and boost your confidence. In our conversations about USCJ membership, we learned more about a program called SULAM for Emerging Leaders. We are hoping to have a pilot class next year. If you are interested, please contact Barak Richman, the chair of the nominations committee who can explore with you, your interest and tell you more what you can expect. Hoping that whatever roles you choose at Beth El bring you joy.

Durham County Beer & Hymns every 3rd Sunday of the month, Fullsteam Brewery At Beer & Hymns, we sing not only cherished Christian hymns like "Amazing Grace" and black spirituals like "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." We also sing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and a setting of Psalm 40, because we want to resonate with Jewish voices. At our first gathering in February, just days after the murder of three young Muslims in Chapel Hill, we sang "Peace Train," by Yusuf Islam, who was Cat Stevens before he converted. We've sung with The Beatles as they explored Eastern spirituality in "Dear Prudence." For more information, visit Durham County Beer & Hymns. |

New weekday prayerbooks have arrived! These new Weekday Sim Shalom books are being used at the Wednesday morning minyan at Beth El. If you are interested in buying a book to be donated to Beth El, please contact Sheri in the office so that she can properly adorn the book with a label to honor your loved one or a special event. The cost is $20.
Memorial Book
If you wish to have the name(s) of your beloved departed listed in our annual Yizkor memorial booklet, please complete this form before July 15. The Yizkor prayer specifically makes reference to a pledge of tzedakah to perpetuate the memory and ideals of our beloved departed. Any charitable offering shall be wholly voluntary in keeping with the sacred spirit of the occasion. Therefore, we do not have a schedule of mandatory fees to honor the memory of your loved ones in this booklet. Each person may respond with a contribution in accord with his or her own inner prompting and ability.

BE in the Community Institute of Islamic and Turkish Studies Invitation for Iftar (Evening Meal Fast Break) Thur. 7/16 @ 7:00 pm In the past, the Institute of Islamic and Turkish Studies-North Carolina (IITSNC) in Cary has invited Beth El Congregants to share evening meals ("Iftar") with them during Ramadan, and they have invited us again this year. Ramadan begins on Thursday, and we have reserved the date of July 16 for a Beth El group to attend. The program begins at 7:00 pm with a documentary, "Love is a Verb," about Fettulah Gulen, an inspirational leader of a brand of Sufi Islam that the folks at the Center hold in high regard. A Question and Answer session about the Institute, Ramadan and Islam, will follow at 8:00 pm, and dinner will be served at about 8:40 pm. This invitation gives Beth El congregants a chance to meet and talk with some of our Islamic neighbors and to learn more about their practices and beliefs. Those who have attended in the past have found it both enjoyable and instructive. As their invitation says, "One of our goals is to bring together the communities in order to promote compassion, cooperation, partnership and community service through interfaith activities such as dinners." There is no cost, but they have asked that we limit our group to about 8 people. If there is sufficient interest in the congregation, we can request additional evenings. Please contact the office if you are interested in attending.
MoB Sponsored Durham Bull Game Thursday, 7/16 @ 6:30 pm Don't forget to RSVP to join the MoB (Men of Beth El) at the Durham Bulls game on Thursday evening, July 16. Donations are welcome to help offset the cost of the food. If you wish to contribute, please send a check to the synagogue's Mitzvah Fund and indicate it is for the summer food program.
