Happy Spring! We have some noteworthy updates and opportunities to let you know about. So please peruse the brief news items below.

Are you involved with a Detroit community organization and interested in applying for a scholarship to attend our week-long CBPR course at U-M from July 13-17, 2015? If so, we want to remind you that the deadline to apply is Friday, May 15, 2015. Up to five scholarships will be awarded this year (more than twice as many as last year), and tuition is covered in full. Read more.

Walk Your Heart to Health Study Published
In case you missed it, check out this recent story about the Healthy Environments Partnership's Walk Your Heart to Health program. After a three-year health intervention, research findings were recently published in the respected journal Health Education & Behavior about how many of the participants made substantial health improvements by regularly walking with the program. Apply for Small Planning Grant by June 1
Interested in receiving a small planning grant to help support a new community-academic research partnership or to kick off a new collaborative health research project in Detroit? If so, then be sure to apply to the Detroit URC's Small Planning Grants Program by June 1, 2015. We expect to award a total of up to $12,000 in grants in this round, with individual grants of up to $4,000 per community-academic team. Read more

The Detroit URC has selected 12 community-academic teams from seven different states to participate in the CBPR Partnership Academy. This new, year-long program is designed to enhance participants' knowledge and skills in community-based participatory research, so they may apply this collaborative approach to address racial and ethnic inequities in health in their communities. The Academy kicks off in July with our five-day CBPR course on U-M's campus. Read more

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Event in June
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's New Connections Program is holding its Ninth Annual Symposium in Princeton, New Jersey from June 10-12, 2015. The Symposium aims to boost the visibility and skills of New Connections grantees and potential applicants. New Connections applicants are early- to mid-career researchers from historically underrepresented groups.  Read more

Congratulations to U-M School of Public Health Professor and Detroit URC Co-Director Richard Lichtenstein, who has been selected to receive the 2015 Gary L. Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership. The prize, from the Association for University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of health administration education. The award will be presented in June. Read more
