On February 26, 2014, Stuart Batterman, Professor of Environmental Health Science at the University of Michigan School of Public Health stood up next to Senator Barbara Boxer and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse to speak about the public health risks to communities from the propsed keystone XL pipeline proposed by the Tar Sand Industry.

News Highlights  

New Initiative!
 Community Approaches to Promote Healthy Environments (CA-PHE) 

Over the next 5 years, community and academic member of the CAR-Network will embark on a new initiative to improve air quality in Detroit. Data will be gathered to understand the factors influencing air quality and findings will be used to create an action plan and policy recommendations aimed at reducing the effects of air pollution on residents' health.

We are pleased to announce the award of 4 new Small Planning Grants aimed at enhancing the capacity of academic and community partners to conduct and disseminate health research in Detroit. Congratulations to our recipients! See the full list of projects on our Small Planning Grants Webpage.

Scholarships to Attend CBPR Summer Short Course
Application Deadline: May 23, 2014

The 49th Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology at the University of Michigan has been announced! As part of the session the Detroit URC teaches a course on community-based participatory research. Employees from community-based organizations and health and humans services agencies are eligible to apply for scholarships to attend this course.
 
Fact sheet: Community Criteria for Research 
This fact sheet, developed by the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations, provides a set of research criteria that community health centers and communities may use to evaluate their participation in research studies.
 
Toolkit: Community Engaged Research

The goal of this toolkit is to provide faculty, post-doctoral students and graduate students with a set of tools to carefully plan and document their community-engaged scholarship and produce strong portfolios for promotion and tenure.
