On a somber note, as some of you may have heard, our former Project Manager and friend, Jacob Joshua Brown, passed away a few weeks ago. He was a great friend to all of us here at the NECSBDC and CED and will be dearly missed. This month's newsletter concludes with a dedication to Josh.

Women In Business Conference

   

On Tuesday, September 27, 2016 Butte College SBDC will be celebrating their 18th annual Women In Business Conference, bringing together women for education, empowerment, and encouragement with starting, developing, sustaining, growing and expanding their businesses, and themselves. The conference topic is "Business Savvy for Success in Development, Management, and Growth!" 
 

The highlights of the conference will include internationally known keynote speakers; great breakout sessions; our famous marketplace - where business owners display and sell their products; excellent networking opportunities; and good eating. In addition to other advantages, this conference will provide a unique opportunity to educate the fastest growing population of the business community - women.

Jacob Joshua Brown

 Jacob Joshua Brown

Josh passed away on August 26th, 2016 at age 37. Born September 3rd, 1978 in Ukiah, CA to Diane Ryan and Jacob Brown, Josh was the first born of seven children. He grew up in Ukiah and graduated from Ukiah High in 1996 and Mendocino College in 2000. Moving to Chico, he attended California State University, Chico, graduating in 2002 with a Master's degree in social science. He worked closely with several CSU, Chico faculty, including Dr. Walt Shafer. On Oct 9th, 2007 Josh became a father to Haley Jewel Brown and in December 2014 he married Malinda Brown and became step-father to Gabriella, Alex and Eli. Josh worked for the Center for Economic Development at California State University, Chico for seven years. Josh helped put together the memorial fund and scholarship for his cousin, Jesse Pittman, a member of SEAL Team 5, who died in Afghanistan. Josh was an Eagle Scout and Chico district scout leader for four years. Recently he traveled to Tanzania with a team of rotary members to bring laptops to classrooms and assisted in clean water and sanitary efforts. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Josh was a beloved husband, loving father, big brother and a true friend who touched the lives of many. He is survived by wife Malinda, daughter Haley, step-children Gabriella, Alex and Eli, grandparents Jim and Peggy Gowan, mother Diane Ryan, father Jacob Brown, and siblings Matthew Brown, Mandy Bloomfield, Jamie Bloomfield, Jonah Wills, Mark Richie and Luke McGuire.
