Director's Corner
Dear ,

Welcome to our November 2013 newsletter for the Northeastern California SBDC program. This month we focus on Small Business Saturday - the opportunity for small businesses to earn back market share from larger big-box retailers. We provide links to resources for small business owners, as well as information on the value of purchasing from local small businesses. Additionally, we highlight the dramatic increase in SBA loan guarantees in 2013.

We wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

SMALL BUSINESS NEWS
The importance of shopping and doing business locally
Publisher: Alyssa Gregory - Posted on 09/05/2013

More and more, people are being encouraged to shop locally. This movement isn't just a fad, and it has benefits that reach beyond keeping small mom and pop retailers afloat in a difficult economy.

Here are just a few reasons why it's important to shop - and do business -  local whenever possible.

Shopping local stimulates the local economy.

When you shop at locally owned stores, the money you spend stays within the community. That's because local businesses are more likely to purchase from other local businesses. The result is that the local tax base grows, and you can help your local businesses keep each other growing.

A stronger tax base means improved schools, better roads, and greater support for your local police and fire departments.

It creates local jobs.

Small businesses are big employers. With jobs being created right where you live, your friends, neighbors and family can find jobs closer to home. That has a huge impact on family, community and the environment because it cuts back on commute times. READ MORE

REGIONAL SMALL BUSINESS NEWS
SBA Sacramento District Office Record Breaking Year for Small Business Loans

SACRAMENTO - In the Fiscal Year (FY) which ended on September 30th, 2013, U.S. Small Business Administration Sacramento District Office (SDO) lending experienced an increase in small business lending.  The District had 700 loans approved for nearly $306 million, a 38% increase from FY 2010.

In addition the District set records for lending to Asian-owned businesses ($75 million) and minority-owned businesses ($94 million).

"The consistent growth in both loans and dollars over the past five years is a good sign for our region's economic recovery," said District Director Joe McClure. "We are supporting our lending partner's ability to make loans to small businesses and give them critical access to the capital they need to start and grow their business."  The average 7(a) loan size in the District has trended down over the past fiscal year in part due to the introduction of the SBA Small Loan Advantage Program that makes it easier for lenders to make loans under $350,000.  SBA Loans under $350,000 increased by 25% from 33 million in FY2012 to 44 million in FY2013 in the Sacramento District.  "This increase in small loans has had a significant impact on the small businesses in our District which historically have less than  100 employees and need access to capital in smaller increments than other areas of the state," said District Director Joe McClure.
