Dear ,

Welcome to our August 2013 newsletter for the Northeastern California SBDC program. This month we are proud to announce our 2013 Northeastern California State Star. The State Star is the individual who has been nominated by his or her peers within the Northeastern California SBDC as giving back to the small business community in this region. This year, we are proud to announce that Clarissa Correa from our Greater Sacramento-based service center is our State Star. In this month's newsletter you will learn more about Clarissa and her contribution to small business in the region.

We are also happy to announce that Shasta College has received three very important grants to support additional outreach and technical assistance to help regional businesses to (1) export the products (2) expand small businesses, and (3) grow a strong regional agriculture sector. The Northeastern California SBDC network is eager to partner with Shasta College on these three new programs.

Rick Osbrink recently hosted a Youth Entrepreneurship Program in Redding (in association with the Shasta College Business and Entrepreneurship Center). You will hear a little about how the local high school students Concepts and Elevator Pitches.

The SBA has an online resource center called the SBA Learning Center. SBA's Learning Center offers insight into loans, taxes, accounting and other financing essentials. Learn what you need to know about small business financing to get your entrepreneurial endeavors on the road to success

Finally, we have an article to help you navigate the rising interest rates that can have an impact on your business.

I would enjoy hearing from users of the SBDC services, such as our workshops, counseling services, and online tools. Please e-mail me with your comments and suggestions at dripke@csuchico.edu. I look forward to hearing from you.

$900,000 in grants to help Northern California businesses
Shasta College has received three grants totaling $900,000 to help the Northern California economy.

The grants from the state Community College Chancellor's Office focus on three areas: small business; global trade and agriculture; and water and environmental technology.

"We are pretty excited. There are a lot of opportunities to work with small businesses and to integrate some new curriculum into existing programs at the college," said Keli Anthis, director of the Shasta College Small Business Development Center and Economic and Workforce Development (EWD) program.

"Shasta College understands that focusing on jobs and the economy requires new and innovative approaches to prepare our students, businesses and the workforce," Shasta College President Joe Wyse said.

The one-year grants are part of the "Doing What Matters Most for Jobs and the Economy" statewide initiative. They are renewable, and Anthis said the hope is Shasta College will continue to receive grants for three to five years. READ MORE

Bright Ideas
Rick Osbrink at the helm of Shasta College's Youth Entrepreneurship Project (YEP)

Imagine a refrigerator that tracks expiration dates, prompts grocery list items and suggests recipes based on contents. When three recently graduated Shasta High School students presented this innovative idea, their brainchild proved enough to win the top prize in the annual Youth Entrepreneurship Project Business Concept and Elevator Pitch Competition in March.

The competition attracted more than 100 high-school-aged teams from 10 counties in the North State, a robust participation that has Rick Osbrink excited. Osbrink, helmsman for YEP, a division of Shasta College's Business and Entrepreneurship Center, has made it his mission to introduce entrepreneurship as a viable career option to area youth. Four tips for navigating rising interest rates

The Federal Reserve has kept the federal funds rate artificially low since the recession began in 2008. As markers improve, the Fed must taper its support of the economy to prevent inflation and dangerous bubbles in assets like stocks and real estate. June 2013 was the first indication the Fed has given that the taper could begin soon.

The economy is making progress, but there is still work to do. Positive signs include a housing comeback, thanks in part to more balanced supply and demand, and record stock market highs. The Fed must meet its mandates to achieve maximum employment and price stability, areas that remain delicate. Plus, if the Fed raises interest rates too quickly, we could enter another recession.

What could this mean for your small business? It could mean a great opportunity to finance business growth before rates start rising.READ MORE
