Director's Corner
|
Dear ,
As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2013, signs continue to show the economy has strong indications of recovery. However, these signs are overshadowed by the impact of federal and state budget cuts. As further cuts continue to draw down services it is essential for consumers to continue supporting small businesses by shopping your local communities. Steps in helping grow a strong economy through entrepreneurship are one-on-one support to entrepreneurs. Business creation and expansion is the best means of growing the economy in a sustainable manner. The final stages of starting a business (e.g. commitment of capital) expose the inexperienced entrepreneur to risks. One of our NEC SBDC at Shasta College consultants, Leah Goold-Haws, was mentioned in Forbes for an Entrepreneurship game she created with her business partner Joshua Corbelli. Our local SBDC offices continue to provide workshops and one-on-one business consulting services to meet the needs of growing businesses. It is a frequent misperception that the SBDC program only helps start-up businesses. In fact, the majority of our clients are existing businesses who are seeking technical assistance in their expansion plans. Other business owners simply come for an "annual business check-up" to help identify problems before they arise. Contact your local SBDC office to learn more.
Sincerely,
Dan Ripke

SBA Administrator Karen Mills Announces Her Departure
WASHINGTON -SBA Administrator Karen Mills today announced her departure. Following is the note that was sent to SBA staff.
Dear SBA Team:
After four years as Administrator of the SBA, I have let President Obama know that I will not be staying for a second term. I will stay on until my successor is confirmed to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.
Serving as SBA Administrator, and seeing this Agency rise to meet the economic challenges we faced when I arrived four years ago, has been both a privilege and an honor.
As I have said to President Obama, and leaders in Congress, "We are a small agency with a big mission." We advocate for 28 million small businesses. We are responsible for the individuals who create two of every three net new jobs in our economy. And I cannot think of a better team to support these job creators. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone across the SBA for the work you have done to help America's entrepreneurs and small business owners during this critical juncture in our nation's history.
