Abandon or Renew Services with No Blow Tools

Stop Doing This

In the past, most gas distribution companies operated only within their local township and each had their own way of operating. This included installing many different types of service tees on their gas mains.  A great number these old style tees are still in use today. Many do not have an internal stopper and are operating at much higher pressures than they did years ago. Most of these small gas companies have been consolidated into large utilities, through mergers and acquisitions, leaving field workers and gas engineers with the challenge of finding practical tools to renew or abandon these aging tees under no-blow conditions.

Today's safety considerations make it no longer acceptable to replace, renew or abandon service tees while live gas is blowing.  Plunging a wooden dowel or steel pin through a tee into the main while under pressure puts workers unnecessarily in harm's way. Stopping the flow of gas by installing two stop-offs on either side of the service tee is safer but dramatically increases costs.

PLCS has been in the forefront of Gas-Free* service renewal/abandonment technology by designing safe service tee restoration tools as a cost saving alternative to stop-offs.

Safe-T-Stopperis used to renew or abandon ¾"-2" open gut homemade pipe tees, ¾"-1 ¼" street tees threaded into a welded coupling and ¾"-1 ¼" H-17500 Mueller tees missing the completion plug. Additional capabilities are under development for 2014.

Service Terminator

Service Terminator - can terminate steel or copper services ¾" - 2" diameter at working pressures up to 10 psig. The method allows a small hole to be drilled gas-free into the service. A special single part non-hazardous compound is then extruded into the service providing a temporary stopper. The pipe can be cut and capped with no risk to the operator.

ALH System-One Street-Tee Removal Systemto renew or abandon an open gut standard malleable street tee threaded directly into the main. (Used with the ALH System-One Package).

Meter Valve Changer - to remove or replace most ¾", 1" and 1 ¼" rectangular port or ball meter valves threaded onto a steel riser.

These tools were developed by listening to field workers and utility engineers about their needs and coming up with solutions. Why not partner with PLCS for your next service renewal or abandonment project? We may already be working on a new tool and your experience and knowledge will help us design exactly what you require.

Access Inserted PE Pipe without Damage using the Window Cutter

So you have a PE pipe inserted inside an abandoned main. How do you gain access to the inserted pipe, to install a service tee, without causing damage to it?

Cutter Module

Clearly manual cutting or grinding out a section of the main is inexact, laborious and dangerous. Any slip can damage the inserted pipe and then what do you do?  Eliminate any room for error by using our Precision Window Cutter. A lightweight, pneumatically powered modular cutter specifically designed for the utility industry to safely make longitudinal and circumferential cuts in pipe sizes from 1 ½" diameter up.

Longitudinal Module

An ultrasonic meter uses sound waves to measure the pipe wall thickness. Equipped with a digital depth gauge, the operator can accurately set the cutter to the proper cutting depth to eliminate accidentally cutting too deep. The tool easily mounts onto the pipe using chains. To ensure perfect cuts, the longitudinal unit travels along a set of rails and the circumferential unit glides easily around the pipe. The machine's ultra-low profile makes it possible for use in tight spaces. A fully enclosed blade and air supply controlled by a "dead-mans" handle make for safe operation. The proprietary cold-cutting non-sparking HSS blades can efficiently cut a 10" window in about ½ hour.

Steel host pipe removed and tee fused.

The Precision Window Cutter is an invaluable tool when performing the challenging task of removing a section of the casing pipe for access to the pipe within.
