Via West Staff Training for Summer Begins

Staff Prepares for First Session

Nurse interns arrived on the Via West Campus on May 29 ready to begin an intensive 11-week community health training program. The interns add an extra layer of care for participants with medical issues, while also increasing the pool of nurses who are trained to meet the special needs of children, teens, and adults with developmental and physical disabilities.

Seventy-five other counselors, volunteers, unit directors, program staff and health care staff arrived on May 31 for general staff training. Overseen by Director Leslie Davis and Associate Director and Health Care Manager Sandy Keefe, the training lasted four days and encompassed everything from behavior management to special diets and independent living skills. There was a parent panel where the staff was able to meet with current Via West participants and their parents and learn firsthand the type of expectations our families have when they come to our programs.

The first Via West session began on Monday, June 4, and the excitement of the staff for this and for all of our sessions is high."Our staff is amazing - so flexible, so loving - but above all really smart," says Davis. "We are very lucky!"

Firefighters Donate Funds from "The Relay"

Via Services Receives $3,370

Dave Battigan and a group of Santa Clara firefighters turned a 194-mile relay into a $3,370 boost for Via Services. The firefighters raised the money by participating in an annual event known as The Relay, a 194-mile marathon that began in Calistoga in the Napa Valley, crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and culminated near the ocean in Santa Cruz. Battigan, who participated in the relay with 11 fellow Santa Clara firefighters, recently presented the $3,370 check to Via's Director of Advancement, Dean Munro.

"We all know that Via is doing great work for people in our community," Battigan said of the donation. "And this is a small way we can show our support and appreciation for that work." The firefighters' foundation has been participating in the relay run for 18 years now.

In expressing their gratitude, Via officials said the donation makes it possible for the organization to continue making its services available to even more children and adults with disabilities.
