Light of the World Outlet
Freedom is God's Goal for You
Many of us think of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20.1-17) as a bunch of finger-wagging "Thou shalt not's," words that restrict and hold back. Yet, if we pause to realize that they begin with a call to remember what God has already done, ("I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,") then perhaps we'd do better to think of them as descriptions of the life that prevails in God's liberation zone.

Are there any that trip you up? Or might we all feel a little freer if we began remembering all that God has done?

Can't wait to see you this Sunday!
--Pastor Jenny
Light of the World Reflects
Save the date, Saturday, November 7 at 9 a.m., for a Light of the World Day of Reflection! (Actually, it's a couple hours of reflection because our schedules are full, but we'll make the most out of our time!)

Light of the World makes a difference in our lives, and we'd like to make a difference in the lives of others, too. That's why it's worthwhile to spend some quality time together talking about our hopes and dreams for our life as a community, and what we'd like to offer others.
We're graciously meeting at Easter by the Lake, 4545 Pilot Knob Road, and thank them for providing the space for our gathering.

ALL ARE WELCOME!  Please RSVP by signing up at church or by emailing mission.assistant@lotwl.com

The Dakota Experience
 Saturday, October 17 | 4:00-8:00pm |
Grace Lutheran, Apple Valley

Come and experience the Dakota people's culture, traditions, and spirituality.

On Saturday, October 17, Grace Lutheran Church in Apple Valley is hosting an intercultural experience inviting people to learn more about the Dakota people's culture, language and traditions.

The Dakota people were the original occupants of this land and are too often invisible and ignored in today's landscape.

The event will run 4-8 pm at the church, 7800 W. County Road 42. It will include story telling, drum music, a campfire, native foods, showing The Dakota 38 film, horses, and an American eagle.

This event is a response to the ELCA Saint Paul Area Synod's 2012 Resolution on Native American Reconciliation, which repudiated this country's historic vision of Manifest Destiny and the rationale it provided for the genocide of Native American peoples.

GIVE TO THE MAX is Less than a month away

Give to the Max Day is Thursday, November 12th. What is that, you ask? It's a 24-hour period of online giving across the State of Minnesota to ignite generosity and grow giving. Light of the World utilizes this opportunity to fire up our giving as well. Last year we blew our previous GTTM fundraising efforts out of the water, more than tripling our previous numbers. For now, put the date on your calendar, and consider all the reasons you're grateful to God and for your faith community! We'll continue to share more details as we get closer to Give To The Max Day.

GIFT SUBSCRIPTION TO THE LUTHERAN COMING SOON

An anonymous donor to LOTW has generously offered a one-year every- member subscription to The Lutheran, an award-winning magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We are aware that some of you may have made the switch to receiving information digitally rather than reading hard copy, so we want to let you know that this is also a digital subscription, allowing you to pass along your paper copy to a prospective member, relative or friend, or simply bring the magazine to church so that we can put this on the table for visitors.

If you strongly prefer NOT to receive a subscription, please let the office know and we will adjust our order accordingly.
Armful of Love - 360 Communities

We have an opportunity to help one of our new Big Give partners, 360 Communities in preparing for their Armful of Love campaign.  There are many positions needed to be filled, ranging from interviewing families, to greeters, to delivering packages.  There will also be an opportunity to adopt a family if you so desire.  There will be more information on the hospitality table this Sunday.
Volunteer Opportunities at Greenleaf Elementary

 Volunteer opportunities at Greenleaf Elementary

Homework Help Program:

What?  A school run, volunteer supported after school program serving students who need homework help.

Who?  Trained adult volunteers meet with the same student once per week to assist with homework, build a relationship and share a snack.  Many students are from the Cedar Knolls neighborhood.  The number of students served is contingent upon the number of adults who volunteer.  Last year, 47 students were able to participate.

When?  One hour per week, November through May, on either Monday or Wednesday 3:45-4:45.

How?  Training is provided for volunteers on October 26 at 3:45.  All supplies and snacks (thanks to LOTW this year!) are provided.  School staff is present during all homework help sessions.

Gear Up for Winter:

What?  Free gently used and new winter outerwear provided for students in need during the fall conference days.  This is the third annual event.  Last year over 160 students were served!

Who?  Volunteers from LOTW plus two other local churches set up and staff the event, under the direction of a program coordinator.

When?  Two hour shifts available on November 4 and 5 from approximately noon to 8 p.m.

Interested in helping?  E-mail Joanna at PGJGC@yahoo.com.  Contact information and other details for the Homework Help program will be sent or a Sign Up Genius link for Gear Up for Winter will be sent.

Youth Mission Trip

Many of the families of mission trip-eligible youth met last Sunday and decided on the  opportunity to work in rural South Dakota at the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation, which is about a 300-mile drive from here. The week selected was July 17-July 22.  The price is $289 plus transportation, which is estimated at  an additional $85 to $100.
We will need your decision and a $60 deposit check by Sunday, October 18.  Please see Jeanne Schwartz or call her at 612-272-0997
