Nashville Area Treated To Gathering of Barbershop Enthusiasts and Performers from Across the Globe

On Saturday night a capacity crowd gathered at Massey Performing Arts Center for a jam-packed show featuring some great barbershop groups  at the conclusion of Harmony University, a week long educational event produced by the Barbershop Harmony Society.

The list of performers included:

Honors Chorus directed by Doug Harrington
Directors College Chorus directed by Rick Spencer
Next Generation Chorus directed by Clay Hine
YWIH Chorus directed by Debbie Cleveland
Last Minute - Sweet Adeline Quartet
'Shoptimus Prime Quartet - 2014 International Collegiate Quartet
The Con Men - 2014 3rd Place Medalist Collegiate Quartet
The Academy - 2014 International Collegiate Quartet Champion
TNS - International Quartet Finalist
Lunch Break - International Quartet Finalist
Masterpiece Quartet - 2013 International Quartet Champion

In your editor's opinion, the Young Women in Harmony chorus under the direction of Debbie Cleveland stole the show and the hearts of the enthusiastic audience with their great singing, and entertaining visual presentation. This was the very first year a YWIH chorus was invited to participate at Harmony University. They made a great first impression.
(L to R) Kipp Buckner, Katie Taylor, Todd Wilson and Harlan Wilson

This gold medal foursome enjoyed some tag singing after the event. Katie Taylor is a two-time quartet champion with Harmony, Inc. Her quartet-mates in this photo earned their golds with quartets from the Barbershop Harmony Society

The Nashville Singers were admirably represented at the event by
Harlan Wilson, Todd Wilson and by advisory board members
Margaret Campbelle-Holman and
David Winters.

Margaret Campbelle-Holman was honored at the beginning of the week by being asked to deliver the keynote address to all attendees at Harmony University.

Our 2013 Arts Advocate of the Year
Continues To Make An Impact

As mentioned earlier in this newsletter, Margaret Campbelle-Holman delivered the keynote address at Harmony University last week.

Earlier this week, we asked Ms. Campbelle-Holman to describe the experience. She responded with the following:

I did an 'experiment' where I asked them to think about the first time each of them remembered singing harmony. Where were they & what were they singing? What was their memory or awareness of actually being surrounded by harmony?

Then I began a song my father led on our family trips to see if it resonated with them. By the 4th word they joined me and by the 6th word, I did not have to sing anymore. I was surrounded by 'Down By the Old Mill Stream' and it was glorious!

Their reception of what I shared was even better. My closing section was on mentoring (their mentoring) beyond this week's activities. Examples included Wayne Grimmer leading our MET boys and the audience in a song. Wayne participated on our summer camp staff for our boys' ensemble this summer. This was a big hit!

I encouraged their local contributions to school music programs as a cappella mentors for music education and included the mentoring examples MET Singers have experienced, like your summer camp visit which led to our participation in your fall event, as well as additional choral mentoring  examples across genres.

A small SATB ensemble of MET shared a song excerpt from this summer's camp. Our youth stood on stage in front of 300+ accomplished singers and really raised the bar of their own self esteem. Barbershopers are the best audience!

All-in-all, it was as inspiring for me (tremendous harmonizing) as it seemed for the audience (post keynote audience & BHS responses).

I'm glad I accepted the invitation and my own personal challenge to share some 'points to ponder' with this esteemed assemblage.

The Nashville Singers continue to be grateful for Margaret Campbelle Holman's contribution to the world of music education. She was the recipient of our Arts Advocate of the Year Award in 2013 and joined our advisory board in 2014. We are so blessed to be surrounded by so many talented and giving people.

Leaders MUST LEAD and have the courage to explore new ways to position their group to THRIVE, not just SURVIVE.

No matter where you gather, you leave a singing imprint in  the bio timeline of our lives. No matter, what, someone can always say, 'and there was singing. - Margaret Campbelle - Holman
