Meet The Newest Member of Our Bass Section!

Adam Chesney wandered into our meeting a few weeks ago after visiting our website. After spending a few weeks on the risers, he has auditioned, and passed!

Knowing that it takes an "all hands on deck" approach to meet all of our non-singing administrative obligations, Adam has already volunteered to become our next costume chairman. Way to go Adam!

Adam grew up in Chattanooga but now lives in Franklin. Chesney is also the owner of Monarch Landscapes. You may have seen a profile on Adams company on Great American Country (GAC) back in 2011. He and wife Lee have been married for 15 years.

No Rehearsal This Thursday
Special Sunday Afternoon Rehearsal This Week

On Sunday afternoon March 2nd, at 3:30pm, members of the Nashville Singers will meet at Glendale Baptist Church for a very important 30-minute rehearsal to run our songs for the Ryman concert on March 4. Show up warmed up and ready to sing:

Ryman Songs
3:30pm - Seventy-Six Trombones
(Todd)
3:35pm - Blew By You (no director)
3:40pm - When She Loved Me (Sloan)
3:45pm - Over the Rainbow (Todd intro, Ric solo)
3:50pm - Awaken the Music (Sloan)
3:55pm - Why We Sing (Sloan)

But wait, there's more...

At 4:00pm, we will be joined by over 200 Middle Tennessee singers from Nashville In Harmony, Metro Nashville Chorus, Hunters Lane High School Chorale, and the MLK Reunion Choir will assemble for a special rehearsal with world renowned conductor, composer and clinician Greg Gilpin to prepare two of Glipin's compositions, "Why We Sing" and "Awaken the Music." This will help us prepare for the grand finale performance of the combined choirs at the Ryman Auditorium on Tuesday evening March 4th. The church is located at 1021 Glendale Lane, Nashville, TN 37204. All Nashville Singers members should make every possible effort to attend these two important rehearsals.

Expenses Nonprofit Volunteers Can Deduct

tax return graphic

Here's what the IRS will allow volunteers at nonprofits to deduct from their taxable income:

  • Car and transportation expenses. Volunteers can deduct car and transportation expenses incurred to get back and forth from home to your office, or to meetings or other sites (such as a special event, or to deliver food to a homebound AIDS patient).
  • Volunteers who drive can choose between deducting actual gas and oil used, or else take a mileage deduction at the rate of 14 cents per mile. Given the high cost of gasoline today, most volunteers are better off keeping track of actual driving expenses. Volunteers can also add in parking fees and tolls.
  • However, volunteers cannot claim general car repair and maintenance expenses, depreciation, registration fees, or the costs of tires or insurance.
  • Those volunteers taking public transportation can deduct subway, bus, or taxi fare.
  • Travel expenses. The volunteer can deduct travel expenses, such as airfare and other transport, accommodations, and meals, when performing services away from home. This might include trips to attend a convention or board meeting, taking underprivileged kids on a camping trip, or monitoring environmental destruction.
  • However, there are important limitations: The volunteer cannot gain significant personal pleasure, recreation, or vacation from the travel. And the volunteer must really be working -- tagging along on an outing while performing nominal duties, or even no duties for significant parts of the trip, won't cut it.
  • Other out-of-pocket expenses. Volunteers may deduct other expenses they incur during the course of their volunteer work. For example, board members might deduct unreimbursed phone, postage, and copying charges associated with preparing for meetings. Volunteers at an animal shelter can deduct the treats that they're asked to provide in order to help train dogs during walks. Sunday school teachers can deduct art supplies they bring in.
  • Uniforms. If you ask volunteers to purchase a uniform -- for example, an apron identifying them as a hospital helper -- they can deduct both the purchase price and any upkeep costs. However, the uniform must not be suitable for everyday use (providing a T-shirt with a logo or asking your theater ushers to always wear black won't be enough). Also, your organization must require the volunteers to wear the uniforms while performing services.
Limits on Deductions

The following limitations apply to these deductions:

  • Your organization must be a qualified, IRS-recognized charity.
  • In order to take these deductions, volunteers must itemize their deductions on their tax return. (Those who fill out a 1040EZ won't get any benefit.)
  • Volunteers cannot double-dip by claiming expenses for which the nonprofit already reimbursed them.
  • The expenses must be directly related to the volunteers' work, and incurred only because of that work.
  • The expenses can't be personal, for family, or for living items or activities (such as meals for children while they accompany the volunteer to a convention).
  • Volunteers must keep reliable written records of the expenses.
Please consult to a tax professional, and read IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions (at www.irs.gov, click on publications), or read a good primer on tax deductions. To learn more about strategies for incorporating volunteer help into your nonprofit's fundraising and other efforts, read Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits: Real-World Strategies That Work, by Ilona Bray.

   This Day In Music

February 24, 1973 - Roberta Flack had her second US No.1 when 'Killing Me Softly With His Song', started a five-week run at the top. The song was written about singer/songwriter Don McLean.

Quote of the Week

"The volume of your impacts is measured by the direction of your movements, the passion with which you inspire and the attitudes by which you make an influence!" -  Israelmore Ayivor

Nashville in Harmony will be joined by four Nashville vocal groups specifically invited because of their diversity, their musical excellence, and their contribution to building community in Nashville.

Nashville In Harmony, the Nashville Singers, Metro Nashville Chorus, Hunters Lane High School Chorale, and the MLK Reunion Choir will take the Ryman stage separately to share their beautiful vocal gifts with music of their choosing. Then all five groups will blend their voices together as one to form a finale chorus of over 250 voices. This massive chorus will be under the direction of special guest conductor and choral composer, Greg Gilpin. In a city known for it's music, and a venue known for historic performances, this will truly be a magical night worthy of Music City USA!

Tickets on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets and Ryman.com.
