Nashville Singers Bringing Dr. Kirby Shaw To Nashville!

Thanks to some grant funding from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, the Nashville Singers will be presenting a master class on the art of a cappella singers to middle and high school students from across Middle Tennessee on Saturday September 20, 2014 at a location to be announced soon. Our special guest clinician will be Dr. Kirby Shaw.

Kirby has made a major impact in choral music education and has shared his musical expertise in 45 states, Canada, Australia, the Bahamas, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Germany. Kirby has degrees in Music Education and Choral Composition from San Jose State University and a DMA degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. Dr. Shaw's teaching is infused with a sense of humor and breadth of knowledge that is transmitted in an exciting and highly contagious manner. A composer/arranger with nearly 3000 choral compositions/arrangements in print, Kirby's music is sung around the world and has sold over 20 million copies. He has many commissioned pieces to his credit, including The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and ACOUSTIX.

The goal of the Nashville Singers education programs is to become a leader for arts education in Middle Tennessee and a vital resource for families and schools. With school budgets facing increasing stresses as a result of the economy, Nashville Singers wishes to ensure that arts education thrives in the classroom. These interactive educational events on the "art of a cappella singing" are designed to instruct and inspire student singers, and attract more boys to school  choral programs. In the process, students are exposed to new genres of music performed at a high level.

Our other guest clinician for this event will be Margaret Campbelle-Holman, Executive Director of Choral Arts Link. This inspiring educator, author, composer and music education consultant has been impacting the lives of of others for over 30 years. Her guidance as artistic director includes providing choral arts mentoring for music educators, pre-service music education majors and choral performance training for upper elementary, middle and high school singers. Organizations she has touched with her many gifts include the Chicago Symphony, Chicago Public Schools, Metro Nashville Public Schools, The Nashville Symphony, McGraw Hill Education, the W. O. Smith Nashville Community Music School, and the MET Singers, a youth choral ensemble representing Choral Arts Link, where she serves as Artistic and Executive Director.

Music City Bowl Performance Makes For Some
Great Memories
For the second year in a row, the Nashville Singers were called on the provide entertainment for attendees of the Music City Bowl game at LP Field. This combination of cool chords and cold temps generated several highlights. Probably the most memorable moment was having the opportunity to sing Seventy Six Trombones to members of the Ole Miss Marching Band.

Seventy Six Trombones
Words and Music by Meredith Willson

Seventy six trombones led the big parade
With a hundred and ten cornets close at hand.
They were followed by rows and rows of the finest virtuosos,
the cream of ev'ry famous band.

Seventy six trombones caught the morning sun,
With a hundred and ten cornets right behind.
There were more than a thousand reeds springing up like weeds,
there were horns of ev'ry shape and kind.

There were copper bottom tympani in horse platoons,
thundering, thundering, all along the way.
Double bell euphoniums and big bassoons,
each bassoon having his big fat say.
There were fifty mounted cannon in the battery,
Thundering, thundering, louder than before.
Clarinets of eve'ry size and trumpeters who'd improvise
a full octave higher than the score.

Seventy six trombones led the big parade,
when the order to march rang out loud and clear.
Starting off with a big bang bong on a Chinese gong,
by a big bang bonger at the rear.

Seventy six trombones hit the counter point,
while a hundred and ten cornets played the air.
Then I modestly took my place as the one and only bass,
and I oompahed up and down the square.

Watching the faces of these band members as we sang this song was priceless!

"My meaning simply is, that whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do  well; that whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself to completely; that in great aims and in small, I have always been thoroughly in earnest."
- Charles Dickens, David Copperfield
