Former Singer/Board Member on the Charts in the UK!
Leonard Walston joined the Nashville Singers baritone section in October of 2009 and within a month was recording learning media for one of our songs. Within two months, he was sharing the solo duties on "Do You Hear What I Hear" with Pierre Boulogne and Sloan Yarborough. In January of 2010, he was elected to our board of directors. In May of 2010, Nashville was devastated by record floods. One of the casualties of that flood was Opry Mills Mall, where Leonard was employed by Bose at the time. With his job washed away, Leonard relocated to Ohio to accept a job offer. He did manage to make it back to Nashville after the move to sing on one of the tracks of our first CD, and attends a few rehearsals a year.
Len's new single, "You Should Be Here" was released last month and shows off his talents not only as a singer, but as a writer and producer. At the time of this publication, Leonard's new release was charting at #26 on the UK soul charts. You can download a copy of this new track by clicking on the photo at the top of this article. | | The Nashville Singers performing at First Baptist Church in Nashville in March of 2010 |
Leonard agreed to an interview with Todd Wilson for the readers of the Nashville Singers Newsletter.
Q1: What have you been doing since you moved away from Tennessee?A1: I've been keeping myself busy with studio work. I am currently working as an executive producer, audio engineer, and musician for the Kelly Production Group in Mason, Ohio. We recently opened a brand new recording studio, AuralMix Labs @ KPG Creative, which I run with my business partner, Dan Dunlop. I am also the Chief Audio Engineer and for the Fresh Winds Church in West Chester, Ohio and the vocal coach for its praise & worship team and choir.
Q2: What do you miss most about your time with the Nashville Singers?
A2. I really miss the organic vocal harmony: key word, "organic." I've always had a passion for a cappella music, and everyone who knows me knows how much I love Take 6, Boyz II Men, The Manhattan Transfer, and other vocal based groups. I pride myself in being able to incorporate tight vocal harmony in my own music, but nothing beats the feeling you get when you're able to pull it off live. I miss the rehearsals, I miss the camaraderie, and I miss the routine.
Q3: You've just released a new single. What can you tell us about it? A3: To be honest, my current project was a complete accident. I've been blessed with a stable career as a mixing and mastering engineer, but when we decided to build the studio and start the label, we knew we needed something to showcase how we were able to take an idea and turn it into a polished production. . . we needed to show that we were capable of not just editing, mixing and mastering, but creating, arranging, and producing. So, I wrote, "You Should Be Here." My goal was to create a song with mediocre lyrics, and go overboard with the production in an effort to display what we could do. We never anticipated it would be received as well as it has. We're all still recovering.
Q4: What have you found to be the most satisfying aspect of this new project? A4: To be honest, putting it out there in the first place was a pretty big deal. The content, inspiration for the song is very personal, and I kept going back to it trying to fix things. "This harmony could be more dissonant," or "I should have played this chord," or "the mix is weak." Even now, I'm mot convinced its finished. A good friend of mine finally gave me the encouragement I needed to just post it and get it over with. I'm glad I did it. It was worth it. Q5: What's next for Leonard Walston? A5: I'm currently working on an introductory Soul/R&B EP. It will feature songs written & produced by myself and mixed at AuralMix Labs at KPG Creative. We have a few live shows lined up to promote its release, and there will be a music video coming soon as well. I'm also working with a few extremely talented artists here in the Cincy/Dayton area. Q6: What advice would you give an aspiring recording/performing artist? A6: Look yourself in the mirror and ask, "if there are 1000 other artists on the shelves that look like me, sound like me, and write like me - what do I bring to the table that will make someone buy my CD over theirs?" Don't ask what sets you apart, find out what puts you AHEAD. Find YOU and stay true to who YOU are. Talent is great; but when you perform with raw emotion and sincerity, you'll earn the fans that will stay with you throughout your career - not just until you change your haircut.

September 16, 1963 - "She Loves You" by The Beatles was released by Swan Records in the US. Although the song was currently No.1 in the UK, "She Loves You" was ignored in the US until 1964 when it would reach the top of the US Pop chart.
