The Nashville Singers Make the List!
Every year, the Nashville Business Journal publishes their Book of Lists, which provides readers with listings of hundreds of the hottest area companies in their fields, by ranking. The list includes the names of key decision makers, along with their titles and complete contact information. We don't know how we missed this, but the newest publication ranks the Nashville Singers in a four-way tie for 8th on the list of the "Top 20" performing arts organizations in Middle Tennessee. As a result, we were featured in the June 7th issue of the Nashville Business Journal. The top recognized performing arts organizations include:
1. The Nashville Symphony Association 2. The Nashville Children's Theater 3. The Nashville Ballet 4. The Nashville Shakespeare Festival 5. The Tennessee Repertory Theater 6. The Senior Center for the Arts - The Larry Keeton Theater 7. The Nashville Opera 8. The Actors Bridge Ensemble* 8. The Dance Theater of Tennessee* 8. The Tennessee Women's Theater Project* 8. The Nashville Singers, Inc.* * tie List ranking based on total audience in 2012

The final recording session for our new Christmas CD was completed this past Saturday at Playground Recording Studios with 16 members of the chorus present. Highlights for the day included capturing a song with guest soloist Melody Myers, lots of great singing, laughter, camaraderie, meeting Michael Schwalbe's parents, and achieving some new levels of artistry and musicality several times throughout the day. There's still much to do between now and the release this coming November, but the most important facet of the project is behind us. Stay tuned for details on this new release as they become available.

Over 30 people gathered at Whitworth Memorial Baptist Church this past Thursday evening including friends, spouses, significant others, family members, chorus members and a few advisory board members. We made some new friends, ate some fabulous food, and had a chance to perform a half dozen songs for the attendees, including five new songs from the chorus and a tune from the Founders Quartet. The only disappointment of the evening was forgetting to capture what would have been a fabulous group photo. The evening was capped off with an abbreviated rehearsal focused on prep for the CD project and a visit by a new guest singer named Chris Salin.

The Michael Schwalbe Interview
Q1: If you ruled the world, what's the first thing you would change?
A: I'd change the drinking age to 18. (full disclosure - I don't drink at all)
Q2: If you could give your 10-year old self one piece of advice, what would it be? A: Stick with the piano. Q3: If this were a to-do list, what's the first thing that would be on it? A: Finish paying my bills that are sitting and gathering dust on my counter. Then head to the gym. Q4: If this were the last day of your life, what would you be doing? A: Trying to wrangle my imminent death into enough of a public interest story to land me on stage at Madison Square Garden or Carnegie Hall. Q5: If you could rid yourself of one personal fear, what would it be? A: Fear of flying. Q6: If in your dreams you could have created any one great work or art- a song - a painting - a movie by another artist, what would it be? A: I haven't created it yet. Q7: If you could have any other talent, what would it be? A: Actually being good at the piano. Q8: If you could take back one sentence you've ever spoken, what would it be? A: Oh geez. Probably when I was going into freshman year at Mizzou and I was taking Spanish placement exams. I performed miserably, went outside to see my mother and another woman talking. Mom introduced me and said I'd been taking the test, and then asked me how it went. I tried to joke about my ineptitude, and said something like, "Awful, I hate Spanish. We should just nuke Spain so the language ceases to exist." The other woman rather abruptly thanked Mom for talking and left, and my mortified mother said, "Foot in mouth. She was from Spain." Q9: If you had a super-power, what would it be? A: Shape-shifting at will. Q10:If you had coined a single phrase of wisdom, what would it be? A: A broad brush paints an ugly picture.
