Song Selection History
From our formation in 2008 through 2011, the Director of Music researched and selected virtually all the songs performed by the chorus. 2008: Dear Hearts and Gentle People, Happy Birthday, Home on the Range, Irish Blessing, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, My Lord and I / 2009: Angels We Have Heard On High, Auld Lang Syne, Caroling Caroling, Danny Boy, Do You Hear What I Hear, Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming, Lost in the Stars, *Shenandoah, Silent Night, The Lord's Prayer, The Star Spangled Banner / 2010: Carol of the Bells, Happy Together, I Wonder What You're Doing for Christmas, Over the Rainbow, Santa Baby, Secret of Christmas, The Impossible Dream, The Intermission Song / 2011: America the Beautiful, Christmas Stays the Same, Coventry Carol, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Man in the Mirror, Oh Bla Di Oh Blah Da, Satin Doll, Teach the Children to Sing, Tonight * suggested by Harlan Wilson
In 2012, the Nashville Singers Board of Directors approved the creation of a new music evaluation committee.
Committee Structure
The two standing members of the committee are music directors, Todd Wilson and Sloan Yarborough. In addition, three at large members are elected annually by the membership.
Committee Purpose While the Director of Music still retains final approval of songs introduced and performed on public performances, concerts, and recording sessions, this committee provides additional song suggestions and serves as a sounding board for all songs under consideration.
Process Description
The committee convenes a few times in June and/or July to listen to recordings of songs under consideration with the objective of selecting the best eight to 10 songs from the list. Traditionally, 40-50% of the selections are songs of the holiday season.
Basic Requirements For a song to be considered, the committee must be able to hear the arrangement in its entirety, as a midi file, the full mix of learning media, or an audio or video recording from another group performing the song. The chorus must be able to purchase legal/cleared copies of the sheet music in complete compliance with copyright law, and stay within the board approved budget for music and learning media, which is usually $1,500.00 to $1,700.00 per year, or $170.00 per new song, on average.
