How Singing With Others Changes Your Life
Imperfect Harmony - Finding Happiness Singing With Others
A new book by Stacy Horn
When writer Stacy Horn was 26 years old, she was divorced and miserable. So she decided to audition for the Choral Society of Grace Church in New York. Horn made the cut and joined the community choir as a soprano.
She chronicles her 30 years with the group in a new memoir, Imperfect Harmony: Finding Happiness in Singing With Others. She talks with NPR's Ari Shapiro about how singing made her life more bearable.
Daniel Levitin, psychology professor at McGill University, and author of "This Is Your Brain On Music" joins the conversation to explain the science of group singing.

Board Approves New, Simplified Mission Statement
The Evolution
of the Nashville Singers Mission
When the founders of the Nashville Singers incorporated in October of 2008, our founding board had already adopted two missions; missions that remain important to us 4.5 years later. One was focused on the quality and diversity of the music we create. The other was focused on developing the skills of our members and leaders. Organizational Mission (October 2008 to May 2013)
The mission of Nashville Singers is to entertain, educate, unite and uplift our audiences and members through music that is distinguished for its innovation, diversity and artistic excellence.
Leadership Mission (October 2008 to May 2013)
The leadership mission of Nashville Singers is to seek, develop, use and enhance the skills and talents of each member to such an extent that progress seems limitless.
After a very successful inaugural concert, Nashville Singers finished the 2010 "in the black" for the very first time. An Executive Director was appointed. He promptly created two programs focused on the support of music education in our schools. These included the Music Makes a Difference grant program and the Educator of the Future College scholarship program.
To support these two important initiatives, the Nashville Singers board of directors adopted a (third) philanthropic mission:
Philanthropic Mission (January 2011 to May 2013)
The philanthropic mission of Nashville Singers is to provide resources and support for music education in our schools and the community.
While these three missions have served us well, the length and level of detail has made it a challenge for members and audiences to internalize.
Recent discussions between Todd Wilson and Kim Carpenter Drake, Vice-President of the Center for Nonprofit Management reinforced the importance of simplifying the mission of the Nashville Singers, so it can internalized and appreciated by a larger audience and more readily shared with others.
At our June 3rd board meeting, chorus leadership transitioned the leadership mission to become one of the objectives of our 2011-2020 strategic plan, and approved combining/simplifying our organizational and philanthropic missions.
The new, single mission of the Nashville Singers is...
to enrich lives through singing
and the support of music education

With over 25 years of combined church ministry and music industry experience, Bruce Cokeroft comes from a rich musical heritage. As the son of international quartet champion, Gene Cokeroft of the Suntones, Bruce began singing tags and songs with his family at a very early age. He was active with the Miami, Florida chapter in the 1980s and was a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
With songs and arrangements in catalogs such as Word, EMI Christian Music, Brentwood-Benson, and Alfred Publishing, he has also been privileged to work along side such notable arrangers, producers, and writers as Robert Sterling, David T. He is a Dove Award nominee and a current member of the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers.
A church music worship leader and independent artist/vocalist, Bruce lives in Smyrna, Tennessee with his wife Kellye. Bruce is one of the four founding members of the chorus and serves as tenor section leader, auditions manager, and as a member of the 2013 Nashville Singers concert venue search task force. Larry and Michael having their voices analyzed

Nashville Singers is grateful to the lovely and talented Grace Thomson for her assistance this past Thursday in resetting our riser configuration to adjust for the addition of new voices to our ensemble. It is amazing how subtle adjustments in the positions of various singers can impact the unit sound of the chorus. Thank you Grace for taking the time to help us sound better. If you are looking for private voice lessons or performance coaching, you can contact Grace by email at gracemthomson@gmail.com

What Does It Take To Get The Nashville Singers To Sing For My Organization?
We hear this question quite often.
Here's what you can expect:
We like to have a good understanding of your needs and the logistics involved with any appearance. The Event - Will the event have a particular theme?
Venue - What is the size of stage or performing area?
- Will there be a "warm up" room/area for the singers to assemble beforehand?
- Can you provide choral risers or will we be responsible for providing and transporting risers?
- What are available parking options and is there any cost involved?
Musical Program - Are we the sole entertainment for this event or are we just one of several groups performing?
- How much total singing time are you seeking from us? If we were the only artist on the bill, we an usually offer a maximum of 60-minutes of singing time. During the holiday season, we can offer an additional 30 minutes of Christmas music.
- We have a very wholesome repertoire, but are there any types of songs we would need to avoid?
Technical (not necessary in smaller venues)
- What type of sound system, microphones, speakers or lighting will be provided?
- Are you looking for us to provide sound and lighting?
- Will you be providing someone to operate the sound system or lighting or are we expected to provide these operators?
Time Commitment- From the time we arrive for a sound check until our performance, how much time will be required of the singers at the performance venue?
Attendees- To help create a suitable musical program, what are the expected demographics of the audience?
Merchandising- Will we be permitted to make our audio CD available for purchase to the attendees present?
- Can you provide a few tables and helpers to facilitate these sales, or will you be looking for us to provide these tables and helpers?
