WKRN's Dawn Davenport Joins Advisory Board

Dawn Davenport Dawn Davenport joined the News 2 sports team in July of 2008 as a sports reporter and anchor.

She was born in Plano, Texas, but basically grew up in Atlanta (Peachtree City) Georgia, where she became and remains a loyal fan of the Atlanta Braves.  Her father graduated from Duke University and her mom and dad raised both her and her brother to LOVE Duke Basketball!

Despite her mom's encouragement to attend her alma mater, The University of Georgia, Dawn made the right decision and graduated with honors from Auburn University in December of 2002,  with a degree in Mass Communication/Radio Television, Film and a minor in Theatre. She played volleyball at Auburn and was a two-time SEC Academic All-American. You can always find her cheering on her Auburn Tigers in every sport!

Before landing in Middle Tennessee, Dawn started her career in Wilmington, North Carolina, and then Richmond Virginia where she was a part of a sports department that won the AP Award for Best year-round Sports Coverage twice.  She loves to find unique local sports stories-if you have any ideas, let Dawn know!

In her spare time, Dawn enjoys working out, watching and playing all sports, and is still trying to become decent at that pesky game of golf! She loves to travel anywhere warm, and also enjoys mentoring with various children's programs.

The Power of Music!

BB After performing the national anthem at a Belmont University men's basketball game, the men of the Nashville Singers spent the rest of the evening of January 31st at Blackstone Brewery, celebrating a fabulous 2012 and recognizing the folks that went the extra mile to help us reach so many of our annual objectives.

As we wrapped up the formal portion of the evening, a few patrons asked if we would sing a few songs. Hams that we are, we obliged with a few tunes, including Happy Together, Tonight, and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. The restaurant patrons seemed to enjoy it, and many of them crowded around us with their iPhone capturing photos and video of our singing.

The next day, we received the following note via email.

I wanted to share the delight of hearing your group last night. Our 37 year old daughter had just been told she needed emergency back surgery. This after 18 months of battling a life threatening blood disorder called amyloidosis. We came in to eat and were basically drowning our sorrows with some late food and a couple beers. We were really feeling low.

When the signing started and we heard the power of your voices we were uplifted with tears of joy. We feel God placed you there at just the right time to provide assurance that things were going to be alright. We talked afterward with one of you who suggested we write on your blog. This is as close I could come to your blog.

Blessings,

Louis and Sherlene Schumacher

Quote of the Week

Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.
- Warren Bennis

High Expectations - One of the Keys To Our Success
4
Todd The mission of Nashville Singers is to entertain, educate, unite and uplift our audiences and members through music that is distinguished for its innovation, diversity and artistic excellence. This mission supports our vision to be a dynamic choral leader, enriching lives through the performance of significant music. Achieving this mission and vision requires an above average level of dedication from each member.

This Is What We Expect of Our Members:

1. Dedication to excellence: The Nashville Singers are dedicated to achieving the highest level of singing and performance quality. Achieving our collective goal starts with our members; therefore, each member must be dedicated to achieving the excellence we seek.

2. Administration of the chorus: The Nashville Singers have an "active member only policy." This means that each member is expected to perform one of the following: chair or serve on at least one committee, accept a position as an appointed official, serve in a chorus elective office, or be accountable for a position of responsibility within the chorus.

3. Participation at rehearsals: The Nashville Singers expect each member to attend all rehearsals on time and to participate attentively in the entire rehearsal schedule.

4. Memorization of music and performance plans: The Nashville Singers require each member to be able to follow the Director of Music or his assistants and/or coaches. Members are required to memorize the chorus music and visual plan within four weeks of introduction. The Nashville Singers do not expect this to be accomplished at chorus rehearsals; therefore, it is expected that a member will spend time away from the rehearsal to accomplish these requirements.

5. Certification for performances/recording sessions: Prior to a performance or recording session, or as new music is added to the chorus repertoire, and at the discretion of the directors or section leaders, a demonstration of proficiency in notes and lyrics may be required through the use of a tape or MP3 recorder or other methods as may be designated. In addition, special demonstrations of the visual plan may be required. Inability of a member to perform any music to an established standard may disqualify him from participating in performances and/or recording sessions.

6. Participation at performances: Members are expected to participate in all Nashville Singers public performances. However, representing Nashville Singers by singing in public appearances is a privilege which will can be jeopardized by poor attendance at rehearsals. Exceptions can be made, on an individual basis.

7. Positive attitude: The Nashville Singers expect each member to maintain a positive attitude at all chorus functions. This is not to say you cannot have an opinion or make a suggestion. However, problems or complaints should be brought to the attention of a member of the Nashville Singers Board of Directors, in private, and preferably in writing.

8. Participation in ticket sales: The Nashville Singers will produce one or more concerts each year which depend on public ticket sales to achieve financial success. Each member is required to sell tickets to these events.

9. Payment of dues: Membership in Nashville Singers requires payment of dues. The chorus Secretary or Treasurer can assist you with information regarding membership options available and the cost for each.

10. Agreement to abide by Nashville Singers expectations of membership, standards and policies: Each member of the Nashville Singers is expected to read and abide by the expectations of membership, standards, "Code of Ethics" and policies that may be enacted from time to time by the Chorus Board of Directors.

For a third consecutive year, Nashville Singers is offering FREE SINGING LESSONS to aspiring singers in Middle Tennessee. This program is open to male and female singers young and old, from teenagers to senior citizens.

Last year's program attracted 27 participants from across Tennessee and as far away as Ohio.

These lessons are full of valuable and creative opportunities for skill, talent and knowledge growth. The clinicians are excellent. The content is rich and exciting. You'll receive a combination of technical and artistic vocal training, covering the following areas:
  • Breathing-posture, breath support and control for singing freely produced tones
  • Resonance-tone placement, emotional color and blend
  • Vowels - target sounds, diction and diphthongs
  • Rhythm - creating precise synchronization
  • Dynamics - use of soft/loud ranges to create meaning and artistic joy
  • Artistry - something magical that can happen when notes and words become second nature

THE BEST PART...

You're invited to join Nashville Singers that afternoon at 4:00pm when we present a free mini-concert for your friends and family. You'll be able to join us on stage to sing the songs we've learned together, and hear the public debut of a few of our new songs for 2013.
