 Q: What is a cappella?
A: A cappella is not a genre but a style of musical performance: any music performed by voices alone (or, to be a bit more inclusive if a bit less precise, by the human voice, vocal apparatus, and sometimes body alone). Although any type of music may be performed a cappella -- and every type has been! --, thanks to the popularity of contemporary a cappella, the term is often used to mean voices-only performance of modern genres of music from the 20th and 21st centuries, including barbershop, doo-wop, hip-hop, jazz, pop, R&B, and rock and its derivatives. Historically, the Italian term a cappella referred to music performed "in the style of the chapel": vocal music either without instrumental accompaniment or, at most, with instruments only duplicating the vocal line(s). As "chapel" implies, one strong tradition of such vocal music was non-secular or sacred in subject-matter; it was often liturgical, performed as part of religious service. Whether sacred or secular, the earliest attested vocal music was monophonic, consisting of a single vocal line or melody.
Q: Do you have to sing to join Nashville Singers?
A: No. A special class of membership has been created to allow "non-singers" to be a part of Nashville Singers. Associates assist the organization in a wide range of activities including administrative support.
Q: How do I join as a singing member?
A: Auditions can be scheduled at your convenience. For additional information, visit the auditions page of this website or send an email to membership@nashvillesingers.org.
Q: Do you have to read music to be a singing member?
A: Singing members do not have to read music to join Nashville Singers. Part-predominant learning media is provided for most songs in the repertoire. The chorus asks that all members have a commitment to the mission of the organization and the desire to perform.
Q: Will the Nashville Singers sing for me or my organization?
A: Nashville Singers is open to invitations to sing for audiences around the world. As a volunteer chorus our available performance time is limited. For information on booking the full chorus or a quartet, send an email to bookings@nashvillesingers.org.
Q: Are the singers professionals?
A: All of the singers in Nashville Singers are volunteers and receive no compensation for their participation in the chorus. The members come from a variety of professions and walks of life.
Q: Are the singers paid to perform?
A: All of the singers in Nashville Singers are volunteers and receive no individual payment for their participation.
Q: How long has Nashville Singers been in existence?
A: The first public meeting of this new ensemble took place on November 13, 2008 at the Harborview at Cheswicke community clubhouse.
Q: How often are rehearsals held?
A: The chorus meets on the first three Thursday evenings of each month, from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Rehearsals are held at the Whitworth Memorial Baptist church, located at 3014 Elm Hill Pike Nashville, TN 37214. There are occasional deviations from this schedule so check the calendar page for confirmation. The address and a map can be found on the "Visit a Meeting" page of this website.music education in our schools and the community.

Juggling responsibilities related to my family, Nashville Singers, ACOUSTIX, my HOA board, and consulting work, I rely heavily on "to do" lists." I find great comfort knowing that what I need to do is written down. I keep track of my "to dos" using the notes app of my iPhone. Marking off the tasks is a satisfying visual indicator of forward progress. While "to do" lists are not for everyone, there's another list that I believe we could all benefit from creating from time to time: a stop doing list.
We're not always completely honest with ourselves, or those around us, about our personal capacity. We tend to behave as though we have an unlimited ability to expand our time and energy for work, relationships, volunteering, social engagements, etc. The trouble is, if we do not regularly decide what we need to stop doing, from mundane tasks to the significant commitments, it's easy to find yourself perpetually overextended.
As we start a new year, consider sitting down to create a five item stop doing list, with five things to stop pursuing. On every occasion when you're confronted with a new "to do" item, consider reevaluating your stop doing list. Ponder what you would discard to make room for something new. If you're not willing to cut anything, it might be wise not to accept any new obligations. This might make it easier to maintain better balance in your life and avoid feeling perpetually overwhelmed.
