My name is GiGi Windsor and my son is Sgt. Kenny Lyon, USMC Ret. I am running this year's Marine Corps Marathon in honor of him. He was severely injured on May 1, 2006 and spent 4 years recovering. I saw him persevere every day in everything he had to relearn to do. I saw agony on his face as he struggled to walk. I watched him experience complete defeat on a daily basis. But he always got up the next day and say "Come on Mom, let's go do this. Today is going to be the day!" I never heard him complain or whine about what his new limitations were due to his massive injuries. He just kept fighting to do new things every day. He took two steps forward and 5 steps backward, but never gave up.
I am encouraged by Kenny every day in my training. When the going gets tough and I want to quit, I think of Kenny's face the first time he put on a prosthetic. That gives me a new perspective and keeps me running.
Today he is in college and lives in a handicapped accessible house. He has a positive attitude and refuses to be defined by his injuries.
The Semper Fi Fund made it possible for me to be with Kenny full time for 9 months. They supported me so that my only worry was my son. I would have lost everything to be with Kenny. They made it possible for me to forget about finances and focus on encouraging and helping my son.
I am raising money for The Semper Fi Fund so other families can focus on their loved ones as they fight to persevere and relearn what most of us take for granted such as eating, walking, driving and running.
