SFF Program Highlight
What are Team Semper Fi and & Team America's Fund and "Recovery Through Sport?"

Your hard work fundraising helps support these amazing athletes!

Team Semper Fi and Team America's Fund are part of The Peter Murphy Semper Fi Fund Sports Program. Together, the teams are made up of more than 800 service members who qualify for assistance.

These teams are the heart and inspiration  of the Semper Fi Fund's rehabilitative Athletic Program, and is an extension of the assistance we provide.

The idea for Team Semper Fi and Team America's Fund was inspired by those wounded service members who refused to let their challenges prevent them from competing in athletic events, and whose drive and determination was inspirational to us all.

Greetings!

Once again I want to thank everyone for joining our team, and helping to "do the job at hand" - to support our wounded service members who have given so much.   This is a lifelong commitment for the Semper Fi Fund.  With your continued support we can make this our biggest and best Marine Corps Marathon yet!

This year marks our 10th anniversary, 10 years of serving those who have given so much.  As you read through this newsletter, take the time to "meet" Staff Sergeant Andy Robinson.  Take pride in knowing that this is just one example of how you are helping by raising and running for the Fund.

I am already getting to know many of you by phone and email. It is so wonderful to hear your passion and your commitment to the Fund.  Many questions I receive are around fundraising.   It is my pleasure to support you along the way, to not only reach your goal, but to crush it.  My personal insight to fundraising is this:

  • Familiarize yourself with the Fund's programsYour passion leads to donations.
  • Know your audience! Which of the Fund's programs will best reach your potential donor?
  • Don't be afraid to ask for a donation.  The general rule is that you have to ask 3 times before someone actually donates.
  • Always follow up with a Thank You - this will also help ensure future donations.
  • Stick with what you know and have fun!
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

All the best,

Elizabeth O'Connell and the Semper Fi Fund

Runner Spotlight
Meet Team Yankee Runners

The sun isn't up yet and most people are still sleeping, but the gate to Yankee Woods in Oak Forest, IL is open and car after car pours in.  Crazy people (aka The Yankee Runners) exit the cars, say good morning and start stretching.  It's a typical Saturday morning during summer marathon training. It doesn't matter if you're new to running or experienced, all are welcomed enthusiastically.

In October, 2005, Anthony Scinto, a member of the Yankee Runners, ran the Marine Corps Marathon as a tribute to fallen family member, Cpl. Robert P Warns, who was killed in action in Iraq. In Warns' memory, Anthony solicited donations to the Semper Fi Fund and a tradition began. This tradition has been kept alive by several Yankee Runners over the years including Spero Speropoulos who has run for the Semper Fi Fund at the MCM four times. Yankee Runners continue to run the Marine Corps Marathon and work on raising awareness for the Semper Fi Fund and the needs of returning veterans.

This year the Yankee Runners have formed a Semper Fi Fund and MCM/10K running team.  When Mark Miller, team captain and Marine Corps Veteran, began forming the team he was hoping that five or six runners would raise funds for the Semper Fi Fund. Miller never expected the team to grow to 25 runners. It's just another example of the great patriotism the Yankee Runners share.  They come together for a cause bigger than themselves.  On Monday, May 26th, Team Yankee Runners participated in the 2014 Ridge Run 5K &10K race and BAPA Memorial Day Parade in honor of their local veterans.

The Yankee Runners are part of Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) and led by two dedicated runners, Joe Werner and Eileen Quirk-Rowan who volunteer their time as site leaders.  They are a huge inspiration to runners of all levels.  Team members Jeanne Dolan and her sister Mary Howicz are running this year's MCM/ Semper Fi Fund in honor of their father Marine Veteran James Dolan. With dedicated runners of this caliber Team Yankee Runners will keep the tradition alive and have great success in fundraising for the Semper Fi Fund.

Semper Fi Fund, and its program America's Fund, are set up toprovide immediate financial assistance and lifetime support for injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, directing urgently needed resources to post 9/11 service members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Reserves. Semper Fi Fund has been working with wounded service members since 2004, offering assistance to lessen the burden for those who need it most.

Hero Story

"Military life changes a person," says Andy Robinson. "Combat changes a person."

Andy, a Marine Staff Sergeant who served with the 1st Intelligence Battalion based out of Camp Pendleton in San Diego,California, was changed by combat in some of the most profound ways imaginable. He was on patrol in al-Anbar Province in Iraq on June 20, 2006, when insurgents detonated an improvised explosive device beneath his truck.

"The blast broke my legs, collapsed my lungs, and broke ribs as well as my vertebrae," he said. "The break to my vertebrae resulted in a spinal cord injury and I'm paralyzed from the chest down and also in my hands and some muscles of my arms are paralyzed. I am a quadriplegic."
