AFA National Report

Ever see someone RUN to the stage to receive an AFA membership? "AFA National Report," May Almanac edition, tells you how to find photographers who can take such photos.

Field Operations Update

Wingman Magazine:  By now you should have seen either a hard or digital copy of the new Wingman Magazine.  We plan to publish this three times a year.  The content comes primarily from you and is focused entirely on people... specifically AFA members and the Air Force Family they support.  We'll illustrate how you are accomplishing the AFA mission, how you are supporting our Airmen and their families, and how you are impacting your local communities.  It is a direct outgrowth of your request for more news about our members and our Air Force family.  Thanks to our AFA president, Craig McKinley, Editor in Chief Adam Hebert, Wingman editor Michael C. Sirak and the entire Air Force Magazine staff for putting together this first-class publication. You'll soon note a new section of the Daily Report called Wingman, as well, featuring AFA members in action.  If we are to continue this effort and build upon its success, we depend on you for content.  You've gotten your appetite whet with the first edition of Wingman.  I hope it will inspire you to highlight the activities and people in your chapter area.  Don't be shy; it's OK to brag about the great work that you do on behalf of AFA!

Congressional Testimony:  Last month I highlighted some of the testimony our AFA Staff had presented to Congress regarding personnel issues.  This month, AFA President Craig McKinley represented AFA before the Senate Armed Services Committee on 6 May. The Committee heard testimony on Department of Defense proposals seeking to slow the growth of military personnel costs, the impact on the force should the proposed changes be enacted, and the effect on other areas of the defense budget should these proposals be rejected. AFA was one of only four military organizations invited to testify. See our AFA website for more information. This is another example of how AFA can make an impact on the national scene. Remember, your advocacy at the local level is just as important. Stay informed. Speak out.

Videos/photos needed for the convention: We want to make the annual National Awards Banquet at the AFA National Convention more entertaining and focused on Field activities. Towards that end, we'd like to put together a video of members in action. Please send any AFA related video clips and event photos to Shannon Aud (field@afa.org). Action-oriented photos are preferred. Here's another chance to highlight the great work you do on behalf of AFA. If you have upcoming events, make sure you have a photographer to capture what you do. Then, send it in. Just like Wingman Magazine, we rely on you for content.

Air Force Magazine Access: You may have noticed that access to the majority of the content on our AF Magazine website is now restricted to members only. Traditional members and eMembers have full access to everything. All you need to do is to log on to the website. It's easy and only needs to be done once. There's more information about this below. We hope this will encourage those who have been enjoying our magazine and website content for free in the past to now become members.

Membership: Have I mentioned lately how important membership is to our Association? See the Membership Committee's article, below on how to attract new members to your chapter meetings. That's never a problem, right?

AFA Membership Committee Update

Have you ever wondered how to get new members to come to chapter meetings? AFA's Membership Committee has shared tips and tricks - read them here

Tell us what you think!

For the past 5 months the Membership Committee has been bringing you tips and anecdotes on how to recruit different demographics.  We are just over halfway through our yearly article plan and we want to stop and evaluate how we were doing.  Our committee is asking you, the Field, if you have found value in these articles or do we need to change what we are doing to better relate to you.  If you have any feedback, positive or negative, please send it to Dan Whalen at danielpwhalen@gmail.com

We are here to help you... If you don't find value in what we are doing, we will re-vector. Thanks!

Changes in How to Access Air Force Magazine Online
AFA recently launched its members-only area for its content, including specific areas of Air Force Magazine. AFA membership is now required to have full access to all Air Force Magazine content and specific login information will need to be established. For AFA members who have established a login for www.afa.org, the same login will give access to the digital edition of Air Force Magazine. AFA members who still need to establish a login, go to www.afa.org and select "Login" at the top of the page, and follow the instructions.

AFA to Name Building After Aviation Pioneer

AFA recently announced that it will name its operations building in Arlington, Va., after American aviation pioneer General James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle. AFA's Board of Directors unanimously approved naming the building, in an effort to preserve the legacy of Doolittle and recognize his lifetime of service. A commemoration ceremony for the building naming will take place during National Convention this September. In addition, AFA will continue to recognize the anniversary of the Doolittle Raid with an annual wreath -laying ceremony on April 18 at the Air Force Memorial.
