In the land of Uz there lived a man
whose name was Job....

This Sunday we will read about Job's encounter with God.  Job suffered greatly.  While we may not have experienced sufferings like Job, we all know that life can be very difficult and painful.  We may ask whether God is good loving and powerful in light of the suffering of the world.  We may hear people say that they cannot believe in a God that would allow suffering and injustice in the world.

In light of these statements, we may feel uncertain.  We may struggle to find our story in God's story when that story includes suffering or injustice.  We may not know what to say when we are with someone who is suffering.

Yet, the Bible has much to say on this subject. From Genesis to Revelation there is a sustained reflection on the causes of human suffering, God's role in suffering, and what God has done about it.

The sermon will explore some of this biblical witness with an eye toward how it can be applied in our lives.  The sermon will also be available at allsaintsbelmont.org

Pray for the People of Charleston

Some of you know that Paul and I have close friends who serve churches in Charleston, SC.  My heart was in my throat when I heard about the shooting there this past week, and as the details came I was filled with horror and sadness.  I'm sure many of you have struggled to understand how this could happen.  Many ask in the face of such suffering, "Where is God?"

One of our dear friends, the Rt. Rev. Steve Wood shared his thoughts on his blog and I commend them to you.  Most importantly Steve answers that question "Where is God?" with the simple words, "On the cross."  Below is the link to his full statement.  Please join us in praying for those who are grieving today and for our entire nation.

News from April French

Hello, All Saints' friends!

It's hard to believe I have already been here in Russia for over nine months. Yesterday, I flew from Omsk (Siberia) to Moscow, where I'll spend six weeks in archives and libraries before traveling on to St. Petersburg for three more weeks of research. It has been a very good year of research so far, and I have been buoyed by your prayers for me. Thank you so much for your words of encouragement as I have been away.

I am writing to let you all know that I will be away for a bit longer than I had originally expected. A little while ago, I made the decision to base myself in Colorado/Wyoming (mostly living at my mom's home in the Denver area) for the 2015-2016 academic year. This will allow me to live a bit more affordably and catch up on a few financial debts and to have a base of operations from which I can make some trips to Spokane (WA) and Sacramento (CA) for more oral history interviews with Siberian evangelical emigrees. Most importantly, it will give me some much-needed time with family as my grandmother ages and my niece and nephew are growing up, etc.

As you can imagine, I am grieving the loss of worshiping alongside you all for yet another year, but I really look forward to seeing you all again soon. I will visit the Boston area for a few weeks in November and again at some point during the spring semester. And I will likely live in the area again for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Love you all and so grateful to God for you!

Save the Date ~ Benefit Organ Recital Planned for October 3 here at All Saints!

Mark your calendars.  Our new organist David Owens will offer an organ recital on October 3 here at All Saints'.

The proceeds from a suggested donation will help with the class sponsorship for the Mission of Hope School in Haiti.  This is one of the two signature outreach programs of All Saints.

We are a community gathered to find our story in God's story and the courage to talk about it.

Our purpose
is to know Jesus Christ and to make him known.

Our vision is to be a center of Anglicanism within the Episcopal Church.

Our mission is to communicate the universal church's witness to Jesus within the congregation and to the world thereby making disciples of Jesus Christ who personally know Jesus and strive to make him known.
