WE'RE NOW TWEETING!

You can now find the Chamber on twitter. Our handle is @smithfieldselma

The Smithfield-Selma Area Chamber of Commerce has opened a twitter account to complement its Facebook page and website. You can follow us @smithfieldselma. Later this year, the Chamber will enhance its LinkedIn and YouTube pages and will be live on Google+.

According to a communications analysis and plan conducted by the Chamber in late 2013, social media is increasingly becoming the preferred way to contact and stay in touch with members. We'll still be emailing and using print, radio and web media as well. However, these platforms are the most commonly-used and will give our members more opportunities to follow Chamber activities and events.

THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!

American Music Jubilee unveils TV pilot

About 100 Chamber members came out to Smithfield Cinemas on February 20 for a special presentation from the American Music Jubilee, the family-oriented, patriotic stage show in Selma.

Celebrating its 15th year of operation, the American Music Jubilee has produced a pilot for a potential television series and unveiled it at the Business After Hours. Business partners and cast members were on hand for the pilot, titled "Life at the Rudy". According to Spook Joyner, the producer of the show, there are at least three networks interested in a series, much of which would be shot locally.

A special thank you goes to John Shallcross, owner of Smithfield Cinemas, for sponsoring the event.

Our State Magazine features Ava Gardner

From the Johnston County Visitors Bureau

North Carolina film legend and Hollywood icon Ava Gardner graces the cover of the newest edition of Our State Magazine, dubbed the publication's first ever "Movie Issue".

Almost all of the March 2014 issue of Our State is devoted to features about the North Carolina film industry, including a profile on Gardner and features on hometown theaters around the state and Wilmington as "Hollywood East".

Ava Gardner, a native of Johnston County would appear on hundreds of magazine covers during her career as one of Hollywood's elite.  She was probably the first and only North Carolina woman to be on both Time and Newsweek Magazines covers...

SELFLESS ACTIONS OF A COMMUNITY LEADER

This year's Citizen of the Year Award was given to someone who has supported our community for more than 30 years.  A native of Smithfield, he recognized at an early age that giving back to the community in which you live helps make the community a better place. While in High School, he was active in numerous projects undertaken by Centenary United Methodist Church's youth group and donated his time through Key Club to help with Special Olympics and the Kiwanis annual blood drive.

Even at an early age, his selfless actions of community service created a synergy that influenced and encouraged others to want to participate in the activity at hand - this leadership trait is still evident today. In the late 80's he entered Wake Forest University, where he earned his degree in history and later became a CPA, moving back to Smithfield to go into practice where his Dad was already a partner.

Let's recap...1. grew up in the area  2. went to Wake Forest and 3. is a local CPA.  By now, you have probably figured out that this year's Citizen of the Year is Lee Jackson...
