The "Nuts & Bolts" About Elevators
The idea of an elevator is incredibly simple -- it's just a compartment attached to a lifting system. Tie a piece of rope to a box, and you've got a basic elevator.
Of course, our modern passenger and freight elevators are a lot more sophisticated than this.

The Invention of the Elevator
The history of the elevator, if you define it as a platform that can move people and objects up and down, is actually a rather long one. Primitive elevators are known to have been in use in ancient Rome as far back as 336 B.C., with the first reference of one built by the talented Archimedes.

Trivia

MYTH - Some people have claimed that they have been in an elevator that fell several floors and then "caught itself".
TRUTH - This feeling is a mystery. Elevator experts believe people may think this has happened as a result of the following:
- They boarded an elevator that was traveling in the opposite direction they thought it was.
- They saw the elevator floor indicator lights flash by quickly which gave the visual impression of falling.
