for the week of
September 20th 2016

Water logged fields in Georgia have moved some Eastern production Westward, pulling on Michigan's supplies earlier in the season than expected. After the recent heat wave, West Coast temperatures are down and condensation in the fields could pose a problem for the more delicate commodities. Central American growing regions are transitioning and some gaps in supply are occurring.
Avocados
Supplies have dropped off again, causing shortages to persist. Growing regions are transitioning and new shipments have been pushed back again.
-ALERT- Garlic California's storage supplies are continuing to run out. Light volume continues to cause shortages and high prices. We are now looking at the possibility of an active market well into August. |
Cilantro
After a delay in planting caused by heavy rains has created a gap in the market, extreme heat has only complicated matters further. Supplies are falling short of meeting demand.
Lemons remain extremely tight, keeping pricing elevated. Grapefruit is still very difficult to source and has consequently caused a shortage in the fresh squeezed juice market as well. |
Eastern Corn shipments have sharply decreased after recent weather. Supplies have started coming in from the mid-west and quality has suffered.
Black, Blue and Raspberries
Gaps in supply as growing regions transition combined with weather-related quality issues have created shortages in all three markets. We could see shortages persist well into October.
Local supplies have held up relatively well to our recent erratic weather. |
Local Apples
MD and VA orchards are off to a strong start with Autumn around the corner. Assorted varieties are available. Storage Apples are extremely low in supply, as is typical for this time of year.
Holland Rhubarb
Imported Rhubarb is in ample supply and coloring is in good shape as well.
California Pomegranates
Domestic Pomegranate shipments remain available this week.
Mandarins
Early Mandarins are available from Peru. Supplies will increase moving forward.
Fava Beans
Domestic Favas remain in good supply. Shipments are expected to slow significantly by the end of the month.

Both varieties are coming into season and supplies are steady.

Pre-ordering large quantities is recommended.
Stonefruit

So far Eastern Zucchini supplies have stood up to recent heavy rains and heat. Pricing is expected to increase in the near future as supplies decline.
Strawberries
Pricing has stabilized after flooded field caused recent shortages. Quality is fair.
Brussel Sprouts
Demand is beginning to increase with the implementation of Autumn menus. Pricing is up as a result.
Eastern Tomatoes are just about finished and Western heat is pulling on the national market. Florida will bring some relief but not for at least another week or two.
Green Onions Growing conditions have improved somewhat and quality is back to normal.
Local growers continue to ship Watermelon despite challenging weather up and down the East Coast. Quality has held up so far. |
Domestic supplies are finished and Mexico's are winding down. Peru's production is beginning to pick up speed.
California Lettuces
The market has calmed somewhat this week. A low pressure system expected to bring condensation to the fields could cause problems in the coming weeks.
Bell Peppers
Western and Eastern markets are still active. On the East Coast, Georgia's season is wrapping up as the Carolinas begin shipments. Excessive heat has caused quality issues and a gap has occurred. Western Reds are hit or miss and Imports dominate the Yellow market.
Green Beans
Green Beans have improved over the past week. We could see another drop in supplies in the near future with current heat and heavy rains forecast for the East but the market is stable for now. |
Honeydew
Honeydew supplies remain stable with new growing regions coming online. Quality is in good shape as well.
Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe supplies have tightened up slightly as growing regions transition to South America. We expect the market to continue tightening but are in the clear for this week.
Cucumbers
Georgia is all but finished for the season with North Carolinian growers currently in production. In addition to Ohio and Michigan, New Jersey is now contributing to the market as well.
Red and Yellow Jumbo supplies are down after recent thunderstorms in Texas tore apart Onion fields. Significant flooding has resulted and a gap could occur once storage supplies are depleted.
Supplies are slightly lower than normal but low demand has kept pricing in line. We could see a push when the weather starts to warm.
Potatoes
Specifically Eastern Yukons and Reds have incurred damage from Tropical Storm Colin. The market is stable this week but we are likely to face significant quality issues later this summer.
Grapes
Demand still exceeds supply as growing regions transition from off shore sources to California but both Red and White shipments are improving. Pricing is inching down as a result.
Celery
Quality issues continue to manifest out West. Small heads and external damage are being reported.
Mangoes
Better shipments are coming in and the shortage seems to be behind us. Pricing has returned to normal as well.
Both markets have settled down after recent shortages. Quality is back in manageable shape as is pricing.
