bottle hornsby's Hornsby's Hard Crisp Cider

"If you're looking for some eloquent prose describing Hornsby's, you wont find it here. In fact, all you need to know about Hornsby's is it's a cider. It's made with apples. And, if you ask us, it's pretty damn good.

But if you want a better description, go grab a six-pack. Because a mouthful of cider will say more than we ever could."

Magners
Magners Irish Cider

We love making cider, but we reckon there's only one way to do it properly. That's why we're still taking inspiration from the historic methods we used when we started making cider back in 1935. That's part of the Magners taste.

So is the way we use over 17 varieties of apples, waiting until they drop before pressing and filtering them in the traditional way.

We take time to ferment the cider and even more time to let it mature, up to 2 years in fact, tasting it along the way. Sure, there are faster ways of making cider, but then it wouldn't be Magners.

Magners pear Magners Pear

We all need a bit of variety and that's why we came up with the idea for Magners Pear. Of course, we like to do things properly and dont mind taking our time about it, so unlike some pear ciders, the only fruit that goes into ours is pears.

And of course, you'll only find 100% premium quality pears in Magners Pear, which we filter to get rid of any impurities before fermenting slowly.

That's what makes Magners Pear so fresh, fruity and full of flavor. So next time you're out and wanting a bit of change, pour a Magners Pear, sit back and enjoy.

Beer Facts and Trivia

DID YOU KNOW...

Before thermometers were invented, brewers would dip a thumb or finger into the mix to find the right temperature for adding yeast. Too cold, and the yeast wouldn't grow. Too hot, and the yeast would die. This is where the "rule of thumb" comes from.

As we welcome Fall and its kaleidoscope of colors, we know the Holidays are just around the corner. This time of year it's all about family and friends gathering together, enjoying each other's company, and if we are so fortunate - hopefully an array of food and beverages. In this month's letter, I would like to share with you a few ways to include beer and cider into your spread. With the recent surge in craft brewing, there are even more varieties than ever to choose from. How do you pick just one or two? Well, you dont have to, just grab a few sampler packs. Variety/sampler packs are a great way to try some of the new, specialty and seasonal beers available, without having to commit to buying a package of just one. So, dive in, drink responsibly and have some fun pairing these brews with your Holiday meals. Cheers!

Shock Top Variety Pack includes:

(3) SHOCK TOP RASPBERRY WHEAT

Raspberry Wheat delivers the same smooth taste of Shock Top, with a hint of raspberry flavor. This traditional Belgian-style wheat ale is brewed with essence of wild raspberry and hand-selected hops. It's this combination that gives it its crisp and distinctive Shock Top taste, with its own flavorful twist. This unfiltered ale has a light-golden color and a smooth finish

(3) SHOCK TOP BELGIAN WHITE

We've shaken up traditional tastes by brewing a spiced Belgian-style wheat ale with real orange, lemon and lime peels, and then added a little coriander spice to the mix. This uniquely-crafted and award-winning ale is unfiltered to create a brew that is naturally cloudy with a light golden color and a smooth, refreshing finish.

Shock Top Wheat IPA is no traditional beer. It's a unique hybrid that combines the fresh flavor and smoothness of wheat beer with the crisp hop bitterness of an IPA. The result is a beer that is truly like no other. To serve, pour down the side of the glass until a half inch is left in the bottle. Swirl the remaining brew and pour to produce a rich, thick collar of foam that releases the citrusy Cascade hop aroma.

Summit Vrty

Summit Sampler

Pack includes:

(3) OKTOBERFEST

Brewed in the classic Märzen style with Northern Brewer hops from Germany. Rich, toffee malt flavors up front with a clean hop finish as crisp as the autumn air. Unfortunately, like the fall colors, this seasonal beer is gone before you know it.

(3) GREAT NORTHERN PORTER

Originally named after London market workers who popularized this brew, we dubbed our Porter with a nod to the majestic railway stretching from St. Paul to Seattle. Roasted malts offer up coffee notes leading to a slightly sweet, chocolatey finish. All aboard!

(3) EXTRA PALE ALE

A pioneer in craft beer (hey, that rhymes), Summit EPA has been gracing the pint glasses of serious brew lovers since 1986. Bronze color. Gold medal-winning flavor. With caramel, biscuity malts superbly balanced with an earthy hop bite and juicy citrus.

(3) PILSNER

Authentic Saaz hops from the Czech Republic give our Pilsener just the right amount of spicy floral aroma. With a crisp, refreshing malt backbone and lightly spiced hops, it's a taste of the Bohemian life.

schalfly sampler

Schlafly Sampler

Pack includes:

(4) SEASONAL BREWS

(4) PALE ALE

Our flagship Pale Ale is a smooth, balanced, copper-colored session beer with mildly spiced flavor and aroma from the East Kent Goldings hops. The bready, lightly caramel malt complements the hint of fruitiness contributed by the London Ale yeast, making it satisfying and authentic; the perfect flagship beer for Schlafly.

(4) HEFEWEIZEN

Our Hefeweizen is a light, unfiltered wheat beer, often served with a wedge of lemon. Made with thirty percent American winter wheat, Hefeweizen is balanced with sweet golden malted barley and Tettnang hops from Oregon that evoke a hint of spice. The American ale yeast is subtle, but the grains take center stage and, when left in the unfiltered beer, gives it that classic cloudiness and additional body.

 Millstream

Millstream Sampler Pack Includes:

(4) SEASONAL BREWS

(4) SCHILD BRAU

This is our flagship brew, a microbrew done in the stylw of the special beers of Munich. This beer is brewed in the style of a Vienna Lager. Our beer uses these same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirms why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewery at its best.

(4) WINDMILL WHEAT

Our lightest beer, this is a popular brew in rural Iowa. Malted wheat is carefully blended with the traditional malted barley, and brewed with special hops to create a "Summer Fest" beer. Light and zesty in itself, the beer is served in a tall glass with a slice of lemon. This recipe has been with Millstream Brewery since we opened our doors in 1985!

Pecan Pie's Best Pair

desssert beerSerious Eats.com gives their advice for pairing beer with Thanksgiving Desserts:

Stone Brewing Co.'s Smoked Porter is dry and a little nutty, a bit more restrained and subtle than we expected from this brewer of gutsy beers. You might think a smoky beer belongs with grilled meat, but it's great with pecan pie (and not bad with pumpkin either.)

Samuel Adams Boston Lager Pork and Pumpkin Chili

To honor this classic fall comfort food, our culinary partner Chef David Burke put together a special recipe for Samuel Adams Boston Lager® Pork and Pumpkin Chili. Like all chili recipes, this is open to your interpretation so feel free to add your own touch.

Ingredients:

2 bottles Samuel Adams Boston Lager

4 pounds boneless pork shoulder, cubed

2 tsp pepper

2 Tbsp salt

1 Tbsp ancho chili pepper

2 onions, chopped

4 cloves garlic, chopped

1/2 cup tomato paste

2 Tbsp oil

1 poblano pepper

1 can cannellini beans

1 quart chicken stock

1 cups cubed pumpkin

Toasted pumpkin seeds

Grated Jack cheese

Directions:

Season pork shoulder with pepper, salt and ancho chili. Saute in a large pan until pork is browned. In a large pot, sweat the onions, garlic and poblano pepper in oil until browned. Add in the tomato paste and stir. Add the browned pork to the onion mixture. Serves 6.

Deglaze the pork saute pan with Boston Lager and reduce by two thirds. Pour into a large pot and add cannellini beans and chicken stock. Simmer on low for 3 hours until the pork is tender. At 2.5 hours, add in the cubed pumpkin. Finish with toasted pumpkin seeds and grated Jack cheese.
