Corn Progress   The Useful to Usable website uses to local information to predict crop development and crop maturity.   The following are some predicted dates with a 101-day hybrid planted in northwest Iowa.

Plant Date        Silking Date          Black Layer Date
April 17              July 10                     September 4
May 7                 July 17                     September 13
May 17               July 20                    September 20

Extreme cool or hot weather conditions could change these predictions - but this shows the effects of the warm June conditions on crop growth.

Late Season Waterhemp Flexstar, Reflex, Marvel contain fomesafen and have a 10 month crop rotation interval to corn. Fomesafen can carryover and cause injury to next years corn crop. The application of a fomesafen product on July 10 would mean a corn planting date after May 10, 2017 to comply with label guidelines.

Corn Rootworm (CRW) There have been 877/925 soil growing degree days (GDDs) for Kanawha/Newell as of 6/28/16. Fifty percent CRW egg hatch occurs at 684 to 767 soil base 52 GDDs.

Dig and check corn roots 10-14 days after peak egg hatch- because feeding injury will be fresh. Assess corn rootworm feeding and adjust management strategies if the average injury is above 0.5 on a 0-3 rating scale.
