Planting date study. A date of planting study was conducted at the ISU Northwest research near Sutherland in 2010 and 2011.

This study shows about 7% reduction in yield when planting date was delayed from late April to late May - or about 0.6 bu/day. Grain moisture at harvest was similar for all planting dates. However, the 2010 and 2011 seasons were relatively long growing seasons where a delayed planting date had less impact.

Date of planting and hybrid relative maturity study, NWRF. 2010 and 2011.

Cutworm predicted dates. Black cutworm larvae are expected to be large enough to damage corn on May 20 in central Iowa and May 22 in northern Iowa.

One exception - there was a peak black cutworm flight observed in Woodbury county by a past cooperator in late March. Info from that moth flight would indicate a potential cutting date of May 13 in northwest Iowa. Farmers in NW and WC Iowa are advised to start checking early-planted corn from May 10 to 13.

Growing degree Days (GDD). The accumulation of GDDs started out the season with above average readings. The GDD count has fallen behind schedule since late April - going from a positive 30 to a negative 20 at many locations.

The GDD accumulation can be tracked for many Iowa locations by using the mesonet. Select 'accumulated station departures of precip/GDD/SDD', select the nearest location, select the desired dates and then select 'make plot with options'.
