Counting down the weeks to retirement, President Teresa Hancox opened our Tuesday meeting at Hugo's Cellar inside the Four Queens Hotel & Casino.  After our opening rituals of pledge, inspirational moment, we moved into song led by John Chmela to our own rendition of "Who Let the Dogs Out."  Our singing reminds us why we hum most other times.

Program:

Our featured speaker was Amy Tabor, President Elect of Assistance League of Las Vegas, which was started nationally in 1935 and Las Vegas in 1976.  Amy has been a long-time member and volunteer at AL.  She is the purchaser of 10,000 pairs of shoes annually for AL's Operation School Bell, which is their premier program.  Nearly 8,000 children in the Clark County School District are recommended by school counselors, teachers or nurses, providing them an opportunity to select an entire school wardrobe consisting of pants, shirts, a coat, underwear, shoes and toiletries.  It's not uncommon for a children to comment how excited they are to have their very own toothbrush!  The shopping expedition is manned by volunteers from churches, local businesses, other non-profits, school and scout groups, both during the week and on Saturdays.  There is also an emergency "closet" in 43 schools providing immediate necessities.  AL also provides teddy bears to local police and fire departments to be distributed to children during emergency situations and receives very positive feedback from parents on how the bear helped their child through a tough time.  Angel's Assistance presents a gift box to parents of still born babies, providing a gown, blanket and bonnet for their baby, as well as a book to help them through their grief. Along with fundraising events, AL receives funding through the resale of items donated to its Thrift Store located at 6446 W Charleston.  You can learn much more by visiting their website at Assistance League. And a few final notes - the Assistance League was our first recipient of funds raised at our first Block Party and Amy is the spouse of our own Past Pres. Roger Tabor.

Committee Reports

International - Super Build

One of our largest LV Fremont Rotary groups ever traveled to Valle de Las Palmas in Mexico on May 2 to build the most basic of homes, measuring a mere 16 x 20 feet, with three rooms and a loft, and now a half "bath" containing a shower and toilet.  Our semi-annual Super Build, in partnership with Corazon, affords volunteers an opportunity to experience hands-on labor along-side dozens of other District 5300 Rotarians, and the joy of handing keys to the family's new home at the end of the day.  With only one power tool on-site, and no prefab, a completed home is miraculously delivered in a short eight hours.  Thanks to all our members who gave up their weekend for "Service Above Self." - District Co-Chair and Past Pres. Robin Smith, Asst. Gov./Past Pres. Linda Bertuzzi, her daughter Sarah Tavernetti, Pres. Elect Elect Kevin Wool, Bonnie & Alan Helms, with daughter Barbara, Kevin & Priscilla Mills with daughter Devynn, Secretary Larry Goldstein, Maria Madrid and Ali Sar.

Disaster in Nepal

With hundreds of thousands of people displaced and homeless, RI President Gary Huang issued a statement expressing Rotary's commitment to help provide short term disaster aid and long-term recovery and rebuilding assistance to Nepal. Rotary has an international project partnership with ShelterBox, a non-profit disaster relief organization that provides ruggedized containers with portable shelters, water filters, and other necessary emergency equipment and supplies.  RI President Huang is requesting Rotarians or Clubs who wish to support the emergency relief efforts in Nepal consider making a donation to ShelterBox. District 5300 will be collecting donations from clubs and/or individuals who wish to contribute to ShelterBox.  Donations may be made online or sent to the District 5300 (please mark all checks for ShelterBox)
