Another exciting Tuesday as the Las Vegas Fremont Rotary Club gathered at Hugo's Cellar inside the Four Queens for the weekly meeting! President Teresa Sowers led the meeting team and club members through the usual song, pledge and inspirational moment, and then allowed meeting Captain Rusty Bridges to share his bio. Rusty (Russell T Bridges, Jr), a UNLV alum, lives in Las Vegas with his wife Tami and their three children. His business is Pop Culture Graphics. The majority of his business is turning printed works into canvases. He was sponsored by Pres. Elect Michael Woodfield and said he has loved his short time in Rotary and looks forward to being very active.

Cross-Fines:

To Pres. Teresa for being a good sport and taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge for a second time at the No. LV Rotary Club; to Carla Smith for causing her daughter to be truant, which resulted in a cross-fine to Asst. Gov./Past Pres. Linda Bertuzzi because her daughter works for the CCSD which caused the school absence; to our Canadian guests for singing along with God Bless America and to our members for not singing loud enough; to AG/PP Linda for taking business calls during mini-vacation; to Past Pres. Albert Guida for causing Past Pres. Geoff Holmes' hands to be sore from too much oyster shucking, which prompted a fine to PP Albert for not inviting other members to the party to help shuck; and to Past Pres. Laura Fitzpatrick for being knowledgeable about surfing at Lake Mead after PP Geoff's fine for apparently surfing at Lake Mead.

Gerard Romalo was on hand to from Channel 3 to give a little good news about our community. The Delano (named after FDR) opened Tuesday at midnight, with a non-gaming/non-smoking environment; a glass bottle ban is being considered on The Strip by the Clark County Commission; new home starts are averaging 7,000 a year, nearly double of 2011, which was 3,700 and majority of homebuyers are now move-up buyers; The Shoppes at Summerlin are opening in a month and the job fair brought in nearly 4,000 applicants; a Las Vegas soccer stadium will be voted on and is not expected to pass; Assemblyman Richard Segerblom is proposing a $15 minimum wage in Nevada, which would not take effect until 2017 if it passes; and finally, football season is back, which will be a huge boost to the gaming industry.

Teri Laursen from the Nevada Commission on Tourism-Las Vegas was our featured speaker, giving us a glimpse into the extraordinary places one can visit in Nevada when in need of an escape from the lights and nightlife. Just some of the places she featured included information on 23 State parks, 314 mountain ranges (the most in the entire US), 133 golf courses, over 600 ghost towns, Goldwell Open Air Museum which features outside sculptures "in the middle of nowhere", and the Extraterrestrial Highway. Nevada also holds claim to an area featuring one of the darkest skies in the US located at Great Basin, which allows star gazers to really enjoy the night sky. This bit of trivia was a surprise - did you know the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Blvd. has more available hotel rooms than in all of Manhattan? Teri's focus is to encourage visitors and locals to take in the sights and sounds of all of Nevada and with the new Discount Destination Card coming soon, she expects tourism will increase. Back to Rotary Basics

The annual Back to Rotary Basics training will be held Saturday, September 13, from 9:00 to noon at the Boyd School of Law at UNLV.  Whether you are brand new or a seasoned member, take time to attend this important informational morning dedicated to Foundation, Membership, International & Public Relations/Social Media.  This will be an opportunity to learn the inner workings of these committees, the ties to District and RI and perhaps inspire you to serve at a higher capacity at the Club level.  This training has been prepaid by the clubs, however, registration is required to attend.
